Afghanistan: Could We, Should We Leave?

We have been here before–fighting and occupying countries with ancient hatreds and no history of anything resembling democracy–in Vietnam and Iraq. Lyndon Johnson’s pride led to humiliation, George W. Bush’s stubbornness to stalemate. Can Barack Obama’s rationality save us from more of the same in Afghanistan?

In the New York Times today, as the cheerleaders for the Surge argue for an encore, Leslie Gelb makes the opening argument in the case for “How to Leave Afghanistan.” It is an alternative the President should hear and consider.

The voters did not choose John McCain’s approach to fighting terrorism, and the Obama Administration has a moral obligation to explore other choices than the policies that bogged us down in Iraq and will keep us there indefinitely, no matter what the timetables say.

“Our strategy in Afghanistan,” Gelb argues, “should emphasize what we do best (containing and deterring, and forging coalitions) and downgrade what we do worst (nation-building in open-ended wars). It should cut our growing costs and secure our interests by employing our power more creatively and practically. It must also permit us–and this is critical–to focus more American resources and influence on the far more dire situation in Pakistan.”

  • I'm really impressed that you wrote this entire Afghanistan post without once mentioning Russia. For that matter, I'm amazed the Gelb managed to avoid the obvious as well.

I imagine them chortling a bit over their vodka, don't you?

I don't think we should leave Afghanistan. Obama has said all along that we should fight the terrorists in Afghanistan and I support him. The terrorists who attacked our country and have vowed to do so again are in Afghanistan. We need to fight them. While I don't want an open ended war I think our goal should be to capture (or kill) bin Laden and other top officials.

What we do after that I will admit that I don't know the best strategy. I'd be reluctant to leave because a new terror leader might emerge. But I'm reluctant to stay becuase it might appear like an occupation.

But we need to stay in Afghanistan until bin Laden is taken care of. Of that there can be no doubt.

StockBoySF beat me to it. Afghanistan is where we had legitimate reasons to take action. Iraq wasn't.

I think that if it is found that Al Qaida exists even in part as a purposeful means to falsely galvanize our country behind an illegal invasion to sieze Iraq'a oil (see Bush's ties to the Bin Laden family. And bear in mind that arab families are tighter than bark on a tree) then we should boogie out of Afghanistan as fast as we can. Chasing mirages is expensive and foolhardy.

If Cheney wanted Osama Bin Laden found, our special forces would've had his head on a platter 8 years ago. Oh, yes, they would've. Why haven't they? Ponder that one Grasshopper..
