Michael Steele Elected to RNC Chairmanship

Michael_Steele.jpgThe news is just filtering out that after three votes, former Maryland Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele has been chosen as the new chairman of the RNC.

If you happen to be a very liberal reader, I’m not saying that you’re going to fall in love with the guy, but I think that the RNC has done a fine job in this selection. Steele has stood against the wheel for election in Maryland, (not exactly a buckle in bible belt social conservatism) and authored some very scholarly work on American politics. As the GOP moves into their wilderness period and seeks a path back to the majority and the White House, Steele may well be a much needed shot in the arm. Here’s a brief breakdown of his background.

A self-described Lincoln Republican. Michael S. Steele earned a place in history in 2003 when he became the first African-American elected to statewide office in Maryland. His experiences as a successful elected conservative African-American Republican and his engaging speaking style have launched Steele into national prominence. His first major exposure was during an appearance at the 2004 Republican National Convention.

Current Chairman of GOPAC
National Federal Election Reform Commission
NAACP Blue Ribbon Commission on Election Reform
Law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1991
Partner in the international law firm of Dewey & LeBoeuf
2005 Aspen Institute–Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership
Administrative Board of the Maryland Catholic Conference

Of course, real change will require more than (if you will excuse the phrase) putting a new face on the party. The new Chairman seems to be a serious fiscal conservative, and as the economic situation continues to deteriorate at home, this may well prove a highly salable attribute. Will the party platform change in response to Steele’s leadership? If Steele represents an increased focus on small government, practical conservatism and a bit less hyperbole about abortion and “stopping the godless homos from getting married” then Steele may be the medicine required to get the GOP out of reverse gear. In any event, my congratulations to the new chairman and best of luck in this demanding job.

I don't even know who the last RNC chairman was.

I imagine, though, that he was all over Fox News, Meet the Press, all the rest, reciting the talking points, doing the sales job, smiling, shaking his head a little while the other guy talked. .

I doubt the new RNC chairman will be any different.

“stopping the godless homos from getting married”

Since this is offered as a quotation, could you please cite the source where the quotation comes from?

Or is it just a partisan stereotype coming in the guise of a quotation?

It wouldn't take an extremely liberal Democrat to recognize that Steele is just more of the same. While he's not from the Bible Belt he has bought completely into the Republican support for the social conservatives. He's no different than anyone else in the current Republican leadership except in the tone of his skin. Tone of rhetoric is the same. Consider this from his Wikipedia bio.

At the Media Research Center's 2007 DisHonors Awards Gala, Steele concluded a speech with the following: "I get a question all the time, 'Are you going to run again for office?' And I've thought about that, and I've come to realize that there's still some Democrats out there that I haven't ticked off yet. So, yeah, we're gonna do it again. We're gonna do it again, and all I have to say is, they haven't seen anything yet."

So I doubt you'll see any moderates or independents changing their opinions of the GOP because of him.

I agree with Jim- he ran for Senator here in our state, and tried to fool a lot of people into thinking that he's a moderate--- but that's far from the truth.

He was recruited for the race by Karl Rove- which didn't sit well with Marylanders who despised the Bush administration. Steele is a smooth-talker but beneath the surface he is the same old same old. His nearest opponent in the RNC contest did not win because he had a history of membership in a whites-only country club in the South. A chairman with that pedigree could hardly expand the GOP's base!

Still waiting, Jazz, for the source of your quotation -- see Gadfly's post above.
