Actor Bob May, best known for playing the Robot in the 1960′s series Lost In Space has died at the age of 69.
“He always said he got the job because he fit in the robot suit,” said June Lockhart, who played family matriarch Maureen Robinson. “It was one of those wonderful Hollywood stories. He just happened to be on the studio lot when someone saw him and sent him to see Irwin Allen about the part. Allen said, ‘If you can fit in the suit, you’ve got the job.”‘
For those of us who grew up on the reruns, the Robot will always be a childhood memory, and while May didn’t provide the voice, he was the man behind the machine.
Rest in Peace and say hello to Dr. Smth for us all.
This story can't be right. A guy born in 1939 or 1940 played vaudeville? It's got to be off by about twenty years.
Bob May appeared on stage in vaudeville when he was very young. As just a small child! I remeber meeting Bob May when he visited Australia. I went on a boat ride on Sydney Harbor with him, and footage of me appears in his documentary, “Robot Memories Act II.' Goodbye Bob, I'll miss you.
