Israel, Gaza And Hamas: Killing Civilians In A Time Of War

The world’s attention continues to be focused on the Middle East, where the increasingly bloody conflict there raises a host of questions. A key one: when is it permissible to kill civilians in time of war?

Is it ever permissible? Are there circumstances where it is worse than another circumstance… and others where it is not quite as bad? Is there a difference between it accidentally happening and specifically targeting civilians?

It’s a big debate…and some of it is raging HERE.

Of course you kill civilians in times of war. It's stupid to think that you won't. Politicians and generals who say they are not targetting civilians are lying. They are either lying in principle, for they are indeed targetting civilians willingly, or they are using language to lie for them, meaning that they aren't "targetting", but are not being honest with us because collateral damage or mistakes will kill civilians and they know it's totally unavoidable.

Then of course there's the fact that civilians die in war because of all the disruption to economies, food cultivation or transportation, energy supplies, etc.

Anyone who thinks we can have "clean wars between fighting forces only" should be drug-tested immediately.

the above post from enjoy0rs is spam. THe message is generated by a robot that has a little more human feel to it than usual spam messages that just lead back to an ad site blatantly. This particular piece of span is from a Chinese company that sells tennis shoes.

Just another way to try to fool the anti-spamware. lol

gone are the days of the fields of battle...most war is now fought in urban areas

in urban areas civilians most assuredly will get killed or injured

and when a civilian is assisting in the war effort, does he/she become a legitimate target?

Here's a conundrum I've run across with the Israeli situation:
    ******

...6. "You shall not murder!" (Shemot 20:13)

This is one of the three cardinal sins in Judaism, for which an individual is obligated to give up his life. This means that if Person A approaches Person B and says to him, "I will kill you if you do not kill person C," Person B should allow himself to be killed, rather than murder Person C....

And someone pointed out to me that it is OK for secular jews to defy the most potent Commandments of 623 in the jewish faith, The Ten Commandments Themselves. So my argument is as follows:

If one must willingly die rather than see another die or be killed... why Command the Law and then supposedly repeal it later on convenience?

How should we get behind secular jews in Israel when the whole deal about Israel's occupying that region is for devout religious purposes??

I mean, that IS the reason we're supposed to all be on board, right? What is all the fighting about if not for the deep and meaningful roots of judaism occupying the sacred land that is supposedly theirs by Devine Birthright? You cannot denounce your God's Laws, alter them or thumb your nose at them altogether and then wave the flag of relgion as your justification to kill other people?

Please, please resolve this dichotomy for my satisfaction. My mind likes logic and it's starting to smoke and sputter right now..

And the icing on the cake is that they not only are killing, but killing the innocent as this article points out, on the Sabbath, no less. And we're still supposed to get their backs "for devout religious reasons"????

If Israelis by and large were devout, humble beings following the word of their God and getting randomly attacked by Palestine, then I'd have oodles more sympathy for their plight. But instead, they've adopted this mentality of laxness with regard to their faith and instead have made killing Palestinians and obsessing on real estate their Top Commandment, to which all else is subordinate..

I'm just not buying the hypocrisy is all...killing innocent on the Sabbath.. And their "solution' to looking devout was to ban men under 50 from entering the temples yesterday. Not sufficient in my book. You don't use the young to do the devil's work and ruin their souls. You teach them the sublime edicts of your faith...ESPECIALLY on the Sabbath.
