Some Interesting Drama In Panetta Pick

It has been reported that President-Elect (or can we just get to calling him President) Obama will name former California Congressman Leon Panetta to head the CIA.

For the time being I will refrain from any specific speculation as to whether or not he is the right pick, though I do admit I wonder why a 70 year old ex-legislator would be chosen over a more-experienced professional. This is not to say that I have no respect for Panetta, indeed as someone who has lived near his district for many years I found him to be quite a responsible and reasonable moderate on many issues, especially those relating to national security.

However what I find particularly interesting is that the major objections so far have come from his fellow Californian and chair of the Intelligence committee Dianne Feinstein. Like Panetta, she is a responsible moderate and I have a good deal of respect for her opinion.

She notes that she was not consulted and has expressed doubts of his qualifications. I would think that, given their association with each other, that she would have kept those doubts a bit more private and made a more non-committal public statement.

I do therefore wonder if there is some bad blood between the two (or between Feinstein and Obama, since one would think he would consult the chair of the Intelligence Committee on the CIA pick).

Just some interesting drama for us to watch.

  • Both Feinstein and Rockefeller went along with the Bush torture agenda. Both were likely among the very few legislators briefed about it. Panetta was always outspokenly against it. Obama appears to be staying far away from those associated with "enhanced interrogation" (can we say potential war crimes?). There's some serious wet cleanup to be done at the Agency, and I think Panetta with his Mr. Fixit reputation is a good pick. Legislators on both sides of the aisle, as well as former and current agency officials may have much to fear from Panetta's scrutiny.

"she is a responsible moderate "

That just cracked me up. Mabey in Cali, I don't know, but it just struck me as funny.

I can only conclude based upon the selections of Obama that that which we all knew to be the truth is panning out to indeed be the truth.

    The truth?

The DNC party establishment is running the show. Always has and always will and now its time for Obama to pay back his soul to the party that got him to power.

Change? Yep. The name on the Whitehouse door.
  • great icon greenschemes, to represent the whining crybaby wing of the Republican party.

Actually I have absolutely no idea how that got their, how to remove it or how to change it. But it pretty much does fit the Politics in general of the United States of America.
When Bush was in charge the Crybaby left was in full swing.
Now that the Dems are in control Im sure the crybaby right will be equally in full swing.
