Andrew Sullivan on “The Palin Nightmare”

With the election now over, pretty much, I really don’t want to waste much time on as loathsome a creature as Sarah Palin. I wrote about her extensively during the campaign, but what I may not have expressed explicitly — though it was certainly there implicitly — was my utter contempt for her. There are few political figures I despise as much as I came to despise her. She is, as I put it, an ignorant thug and an arrogant twit. Simply put, she was, given her place on the presidential ticket of a major party, an embarrassment to the United States. And nothing has changed since the election. She is still utterly clueless yet still thinks she has some sort of God-given right to impose herself on the American people.

Along these lines, my must-read of the day (actually, from yesterday) comes from one of Palin’s harshest and most determined critics — for which I admire him — Andrew Sullivan, whose post “Why Palin Still Matters” is an excellent recapitulation of what was, and is, wrong with Palin and the man who elevated her to unwarranted prominence, John McCain. As always, make sure to read it in full. Here are a few key passages:

Let’s be real in a way the national media seems incapable of: this person should never have been placed on a national ticket in a mature democracy. She was incapable of running a town in Alaska competently. The impulsive, unvetted selection of a total unknown, with no knowledge of or interest in the wider world, as a replacement president remains one of the most disturbing events in modern American history.

*****

It happened because John McCain is an incompetent and a cynic and reckless beyond measure. To have picked someone he’d only met once before, without any serious vetting procedure, revealed McCain as an utterly unserious character, a man whose devotion to the shallowest form of political gamesmanship trumped concern for his country’s or his party’s interest.

*****

This deluded and delusional woman still doesn’t understand what happened to her; still has no self-awareness; and has never been forced to accept her obvious limitations. She cannot keep even the most trivial story straight; she repeats untruths with a ferocity and calm that is reserved only to the clinically unhinged; she has the educational level of a high school drop-out; and regards ignorance as some kind of achievement. It is excruciating to watch her – but more excruciating to watch those who feel obliged to defend her.

Her candidacy, in short, was indefensible. It remains indefensible.

Keep at it, Andrew. Because, as I put it repeatedly during the campaign, Americans deserve to know the truth about Sarah Palin. They still do. We all still do.

Especially with Palin “claiming vindication” and being “touted as a future leader of the GOP.”

Displaying any kind of admiration for the rantings of Andrew Sullivan sure doesn't help you any.

We already know how snobs feel about Palin.

The more she makes certain types of people howl, the more popular she will be. But, that's your problem.
  • AustinRoth
Dude. Seriously. Your side won. Enjoy it.

I mean, PDS? Over a transient figure in American politics whose 15 minutes won't make it past Obama's inauguration? What a waste of your outrage and energy.
  • wpat
I couldn't agree with you more, Mr. Stickings. I can't understand why the media keeps wasting so much time on Palin. Frankly, the majority of us are quite sick of her. If the media would just stop giving her so much undeserved attention, maybe she'll go away. One can only hope.

A little snippet collage: "loathsome a creature as Sarah Palin...my utter contempt for her...few political figures I despise as much as I came to despise her...She is, as I put it, an ignorant thug and an arrogant twit...an embarrassment to the United States...She is still utterly clueless..."

For all of the complaining we all tend to do about the toxic nature of divisive politics, you seem to just jump right in and relish in it. With all due respect, your post makes Karl Rove look like a consensus builder. As far as I'm concerned, you and Sullivan can keep climbing into the rabbit hole to figure out who Trig's real parents are. The rest of us just might have a few more pressing issues to talk about.

Mikey has normally been the #1 immoderate soul on this site. #1 immature and other things, too.

A.R. Don't forget the earlier Huckabee Derangement Syndrome.
  • I think this is more of an issue for the rightwing to deal with. How could they let someone so awful become their VP? How could they support her once she did?

But it is worrying that so many people voted for McCain even after he chose Palin.
  • kritt11
Did McCain pick her because his advisors were telling him that he had almost no chance of winning anyway? Maybe he just didn't think it through and was throwing a hail mary. I'm tired of hearing about her too--and am grateful the US dodged the bullet this time. 8 years of Cheney was punishment enough.

"this person (Palin) should never have been placed on a national ticket in a mature democracy"

    Nailed it.

"I think this is more of an issue for the rightwing to deal with."

    Also nailed it.
  • lurxst
I am totally fine with the prospect of the Republican party continuing to nominate losers for their presidential preference.
  • kritt11
Chris- What is more worrying is the number of people who voted for McCain BECAUSE Palin was on the ticket. The ones who think someone just like them should be VP- and not a person with superior education, experience and ability.
  • EEllis
Ok so you don't like her right? SO? It's just another Palin rant without any sumbstance, just venomous harangue. To be honest we really don't know enough about Palin to hate her, just the character the RNC and the press created. It's like hating a new pop star for their persona when there is no telling what their really personalinty is. In both cases you hate an idea not a person. That the reaction to Palin is so strong on both sides has more to do with the person than Palin. A serious lack of maturity
  • qdpsteve
Yawn. Another day, another unhinged rant from Stickings. Has this guy ever met a Republican he didn't want to throw naked into a cold jail cell?

As for me personally, and although I disagree with her on a number of issues, I hope Palin sticks around and is a success for quite some time, if for nothing else just to annoy and irritatate "tolerant" hypocrites like Mikey above. His kind deserves the aggravation.
  • Rudi
Seems the wingnuts don't like Mikey. What happened to your ad hominem attacks on Shaun, I thought he was public enemy #1 to your crowd.
    /end snark
  • EEllis
So ignoring what everone said and labling people who are tired of his public display of PDS as deranged. I see no change here.

I hope she runs on the 2012 ticket, so we can all have a good laugh at Tina Fey on SNL. Then after losing the middle once more for the GOP, she fly back to Wasilla and political oblivion on her broomstick! Maybe she can look at a world map in the interim. :--)
  • EEllis
I couldn't care less if she runs kritt. As I have said elsewhere the anger shown towards Palin has more to do with the person angry than Palin. The Africa thing has already been shown as BS, and the sexist insult just shows where you are as a person. It's really just sad.
  • kritt11
EEllis- Do you have any idea what you are saying? If you are calling me sexist --- do you realize that I was a vehement Hillary Clinton supporter who was incensed at her sexist treatment by the press?

My dislike of Palin comes from her lack of qualifications to be VP, her dishonesty about Troopergate and the Bridge to Nowhere, and her use of nasty smear tactics during the election. She has a populist charisma but made a joke out of McCain's ticket. She seems to blur the lines between church and state-- and says she only acts out of God's will. Its a turnoff for well-educated voters.
  • EEllis
Yep I know what I am saying. As to you being sexist I really have no idea nor do I care. Your remark was sexist,"she fly back to Wasilla and political oblivion on her broomstick". Obama doesn't have any better qualifications for president, the personnel board cleared her in Troopergate, She shut down the bridge to nowhere, and lets face it her big crime was she was popular for about a minute and scared the crap out of those that wanted Obama elected. That's her big crime. The rest is BS. It's over the top crazy crap. You hate an idea not a person because we don't know her anymore that we do a newly minted pop star with a corporate designed image. McCain's campaign wanted her to go stir the christen right and she followed their plan. Who knows if She would of done things the same way. She may even be worse but you sure as hell don't know. And yes the broomstick comment is and was sexist no matter who you supported.
