Georgia Congressman Paul Broun Calls Obama Marxist

He said it at the Rotary Club then repeated it yesterday to AP:

A Republican congressman from Georgia is calling President-elect Obama a Marxist and warning that he might be planning to form a Gestapo-like security force so he can rule as a dictator.

A constituent raves! Griftdrift finds the ridiculousness far from sublime. Jake Tapper adds context:

In July, Broun explained, Obama spoke of creating a civilian force so as to help the military shoulder some of the nation’s national security burden..

“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”

Broun theorized that after Obama creates this national police force he’ll ban gun ownership.

“We can’t be lulled into complacency,” Broun said. “You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential.”

The AJC’s Jay Bookman:

Broun might as well have claimed that he had been abducted by aliens and appointed queen of their planet Bogusia… Sane people all over the country are snickering at Broun, as they should be. He is the point at which the lunatic fringe and Republican officeholders intersect.

Increasingly, with Republican moderates losing primaries and elections, the lunatic fringe are the only remaining Republican office holders.

Wait a minute… the guy is complaining that Obama will have a national security force that answers to Obama… one as strong as the U.S. military. I thought the U.S. military was a national security force and Obama will be its commander in chief.

Perhaps what the U.S. needs is a security force that stays in the U.S. and works during times of emergency. Oh, wait. We have that too in the form of the National Guard. Too bad they're overseas fighting Bush's war of choice in Iraq.

I guess if the right wing fanatics can't find fault with the job Obama is doing or his actual proposals the only way to attack him is to make stuff up.

    Bingo!

Case in point, The Fairness Doctrine.

  7. Hollow Laugh of the Day: Georgia Congressman Fears Obama Dictatorship

by Teh Nutroots | Here is a stellar display of the sort of reasoning we’ve seen from the right during the last few months of the election and also a piece of inflammatory rhetoric clearly designed to get the dumber Republicans up in arms. The Republic…

And there's the rub — all that is left in the current incarnation of the Republican party are the hardcore zealots, the koolaid drinkers, and the extremist morality ideologues. There were very few moderate and intelligent Republicans left in any position of power before the election, and after the election – even fewer. So we get the lunatic fringe like this gentleman, and the lady up in Minnesota that wanted a McCarthy-like investigation on whether or not senators and congressmen were patriotic enough or not. The Republican party has turned in on itself, purging anyone who dares to utter a peep of dissent, and because the ever-yawning gap between redstate and bluestate America, that's not likely to change in the forseeable future. David Brooks had an interesting article that touched some of these topics today: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/11/opinion/11bro… , about the upcoming battle between Traditionalists and Reformers for the future of the Republican party.

Feel sorry for Paul Broun – Makes me want to change parties – Maybe it's better to be a democrat. Republicans have lost their party. Guess Mr. Broun doesn't work well with others. He must be too old.
