Smear-Hurling Romney Gets It All Backwards on Obama, McCain, and the House Flap

From yesterday’s Boston Globe:

Romney: McCain earned his homes; Obama didn’t

Yes, Romney really is a twisted partisan fool.

In a speech yesterday in Denver — of course! — he claimed that while McCain deserved all his houses because of his and his family’s “hard work,” Obama “got a special deal from a convicted felon.” That “convicted felon” is Tony Rezko — and the GOP Smear Machine, of which Romney is a willing part, is playing the Rezko card hard these days — but, as the Globe notes, rightly, “[t]here is no evidence… that the Obamas got any ’special deal’ [to buy a piece of land to expand his property in Chicago] engineered by Rezko. Obama was able to buy the place thanks to two best-selling books and the six-figure salaries he and his wife were both earning.”

So, Mitt, do you really believe that the Obamas haven’t worked hard for their money? They are both successful professionals, much more successful in the private sector than the McCains, and, what’s more, Barack has gone on to be a hugely successful author.

And the McCains, did they work hard for their money as well? Well, John has been somewhat successful, yes, but it helps that he married a wealthy heiress, no? That’s right, let’s not forget that much of their wealth is family money. Cindy’s father, James Hensley, was the founder of Hensley & Co., a wholesaler and distributor for beer giant Anheuser-Busch. Cindy is now the chair, but, obviously, she didn’t rise to that position on her merits. John, meanwhile, was hired as Hensley’s vice president of public relations in 1981, shortly after he left the Navy (and two years after he met Cindy and started dating her as a still-married man). How do you think he got that job? Lots of hard work, no doubt. Just as I’m sure it was hard work that got McCain’s son Andrew the job of Hensley CFO.

Romney, once again, has it all backwards.

Boy, how ignorant are you? Of course Obama is part of the Rezko Syrian mafia. It isn't just the house (although that shows Obama's criminality too: he never wanted a house, it's a front so Rezko can hide assets from GE and casinos--Obama was happy to go along).

Just read Evelyn Pringle's "Curtain Time" articles at opednews.com. Here's a sample of Obama's criminality, for which he will be indicted under 18 USC 1346 (bet you don't know what that is either, idiot). By the way, are you also a member of the Syrian mafia? Did they pay you to write your ridiculous entry. Anyway, scum, here's Evelyn:

Tony Rezko is a private citizen. Therefore, the evidence presented in the trial focused on his influence over officials in getting members appointed to the Boards. Prosecutors did not discuss how the legislation got passed that enabled the Planning Board to be set up in a way that allowed for the appointment of members to rig the votes to begin with.

That part of the scheme will likely be detailed in future indictments, probably starting with Blagojevich. Blagojevich signed the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Act with an effective date of June 27, 2003. However, before he could sign the act, a bill had to be passed by the Illinois House and Senate. As discussed fully in Curtain Time Part II, Obama was the inside guy in the senate who pushed through the legislation that resulted in the Act.

Obama was appointed chairman of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. The minute the bill was introduced, it was referred to his committee for review. The sponsors of the bill also served on this committee with Obama. Within a month, Chairman Obama sent word to the full senate that the legislation should be passed.

On May 31, 2003, Senate Bill 1332 passed and specified that the “Board shall be appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate." The legislation reduced the number of members from 15 to 9, paving the way for the appointment of a five-bloc majority to rig the votes.

The corrupt members appointed included three doctors who contributed to Obama. Michel Malek gave Obama $10,000 on June 30, 2003 and donated $25,000 to Blagojevich on July 25, 2003. Malek also gave Obama another $500 in September 2003.

Fortunee Massuda donated $25,000 to Blagojevich on July 25, 2003, and gave a total of $2,000 to Obama on different dates. After he was appointed, Dr Imad Almanaseer contributed a total of $3,000 to Obama. Almanaseer did not give money to Blagojevich.

When the first pay-to-play scheme was put in play, and the application for approval of a new hospital was submitted, the Department of Human Services, along with four other Illinois agencies, sent recommendations that the project should be approved even though experts said the hospital was not needed.

During the trial, Rezko’s attorney presented an email exchange to the jury that hinted at Obama's role in setting up the scheme. The exchange showed that Obama and seven other top Illinois politicians consulted on the legislation passed in 2003 and were involved in recommending the members for the board.

Matthew Pickering wrote the memo to Blagojevich’s general counsel, Susan Lichtenstein, on behalf of David Wilhelm, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, who headed Blagojevich's 2002 campaign for governor.

Pickering said he and Wilhelm had “worked closely†over six months with state legislators. The memo recommended the appointees listed above and stated,“our attached recommendations reflect that involvement†with the political leaders.

The persons appointed to rig the votes, including those who contributed to Blagojevich and Obama, are cooperating in exchange for immunity or lighter prison sentences.

    Jrysk,

Although everyone here would be open to hear your information, you are being abusive in the comment.

This isn’t the Daily Kos or Firedoglake. As someone from the right, I’m embarrassed by your insults.
  • Keating Five. That is all.
  • Neocon
The question seems to be McCain bought and paid for his homes with lots of cash. Obama a brand new senator went to rezko and got a deal.

Yeah theirs smut all over Obama but then hey, Im sure in his ultimate wisdom and sound judgment that the 12 boarded up housing complexes that he wrote letters for Rezko encouraging them to lend him money so he could fix them up but were never fixed and now stand empty in Barak Obama's own district are a testament to the fact that Rezko was a fine upstanding citizen.

Keating 5? Bring it on. Lets put them both in jail.
  • Heh.

McCain married a woman who inherited a lot of money. Neither one of them did the type of work that warrants their extreme wealth.
  • Kudos to you jwest for calling out jrysk's hate-speech.

Honestly, I'm surprised that TMV allowed this guy to get through. After all, "Such comments also violate the very SPIRIT of this site -- which was created to encourage thoughtful and vigorous discussion among readers who may share differing viewpoints."

    Indeed.

    "Keating Five. That is all."

Before or after the debates, when to hammer on that issue, that is the question.
  • DLS
This is trivial compared to something that may be exploited soon, Gustav and what it might do to the Gulf Coast. Observe the candidates in particular once it has struck.
  • While I'm also not one of the Obama faithful, I found the substance of jrysk's comment to be interesting, but the tone and language beyond the bounds for TMV comments. (I can't moderate the other author's comment sections, though.) As to the story, I've found the whole "McCain *earned* his houses to be weak tea, given that McCain was a recently retired, not very wealthy military man when he married Cindy and suddenly came into a pile of money. Should they be able to spend her money as they see fit and buy lots of homes? Certainly! But trying to make hay over how much Big Mac "earned" all those homes himself is a bit... well... thin to say the least.
  • pacatrue
DLS' last comment brings up a very interesting issue, namely how candidates are and are not supposed to pretend to be President. Obama got questioned by many with his overseas trip for looking too much like he already thought he was President. However, the public seems to have reacted fairly positively to McCain's recent pretend Presidency with the Georgia crisis - sending envoys, calling Georgia's president repeatedly, etc. - even though he, just like Obama, has very little actual say in foreign relations right now. It's almost all make-believe.

So, does each candidate pretend to have some sway over FEMA when the next hurricane hits, set up a "war" room", set forth pretend policies that no one will actually follow? Or is that pretentiousness?
  • pacatrue
Good point, Jazz. I guess I should say on the whole house thing that I view it as entirely non-issue. It's only an issue because the Republican are still trying to paint Obama as some sort of country club fancy pants and so the Democrats are painting back.
  • DLS
    "sending envoys"

"Rosalynn with cojones" Cindy, that is.
  • DLS
Not pretentiousness, but in this case mainly populism. They'll be out there in their rough clothes piling sandbags here and there, handing out relief goods, etc. (I.e., outdoing the fake "safari-disaster-dressed" news clowns in small boats and such)
  • DLS
So far they haven't discussed how Bush got his houses and other things and otherwise reused Molly Ivins's classic "triple" quip.
