When going negative, be funny

Ok, the McCain campaign has certainly put out a raft of negative ads against Obama recently, some with greater success than others and on a variety of topics. It’s only fair that Team Obama get in on the fun, and I have to admit, this one was pretty amusing. It’s only 30 seconds. Give it a look.

    Too funny.

Hah. I would say something like stop picking on the wrinkly old white haired dude but you might mistake that for Joe Biden. I guess Alzheimers will be the main focus of this years debates.

Obama 2008 — one house, one spouse.

(Ignore any second home he has in Washington, DC)

Well, it is funny, but I still wish it was a funny video by some random person at YouTube and not an official campaign video. It's just going to continue the downward spiral of the campaigns.

    pacatrue,
    I know, right!

Quoting McCain accurately is hardball politics at its worst.

I know we disagree on this, Chris. Accurate attacks are still attacks. Of course, they are not “at their worst”, since there are plenty of attacks that mislead or outright lie, but I'm still not a fan of attacking others. One can argue that it is necessary, and this may be true, but I don't have to like it.

    Pacatrue,
Have you read Josh Marshall's Bitch-Slap theory of politics? http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/209645.php

Obama should have an ad that just shows this and explains what it means. And a second graph that shows McCain's plans will expand the debt by trillions more than his.

  8. pacatrue says:

Ah, yes. We want people to bitch slap each other. Excellent.

Thats funny. However I find it comical that Obama can unleash attack adds and its okay. When McCain claims Obama is a ROCK star its the end of the world and McCain should be hung.

The progressives really do have thin skins. I find the above add funny and I hope it starts a new trend in advertising. Id rather see this kind of adds then flat out distortions.

Well said – I'm also disappointed that Obama has begun pushing negative ads, particularly the ad that insinuated that McCain gave political favors to Ralph Reed (and was thereby associated with Abramoff).

Sadly Obama has aired some negative ads, so it's now a question of the degree of negativity, but it seems clear that McCain's negative ads are primarily in the “flat out distortion” category that you mention, which seems like a truly vile way to run an election. Screaming “Obama will raise taxes on the middle class”, which is not only false but completely innacurate since Obama has proposed a middle class tax cut, and then claiming that Obama's stance on Iraq was a move to “put politics ahead of country” are simply wretched actions. Obama of course countered with the Ralph Reed ad mentioned above, which is also hitting below the belt, so sadly neither candidate can claim clean hands.

Yawn, Obama is still trying to run against Bush more than run against McCain.

  12. GeorgeSorwell says:

Obama is running against eight disastrous years of Republican leadership.

  13. Neocon says:

which is not only false but completely innacurate since Obama has proposed a middle class tax cut,

ahh but you see there is no definition of middle class. Obama says if you make 250,000 dollars or more you are upper class. McCain says 5 million.

Therefore if you make 250,000 dollars Obama stated that you can expect a tax increase but in McCains world and lots of peoples worlds that is not upper class, that is middle class.

    So inaccurate?

Depends on who is doing the defining.

The distortion part comes in when McCain “defines” $250,000 as $42,000.

    Neocon–

Go ahead and defend the Bush Administration's stewardship.

Make a positive case for them.
