The Quota Dodge

So one of the predominant misconceptions out there today about affirmative action is that it’s a quota system. This is false, as I have gently reminded CNN, but it still seems to hold a lot of sway over the electorate when debating plans to abolish equal opportunity programs like affirmative action.

But now, civil rights groups fighting to defend affirmative action are test-running a new plan that seeks to neutralize the misconceptions on quotas…..

If all that you have left is black only mentoring programs, or women only tutoring, or Hispanic only recruiters, then it will create a huge amount of controversy will solving little

If you look at 8a contracting, it is stil a quota system. It sound like the pro-quota forces in Colorado want to distract people while taking about college admission while leaving the minority contracting quota programs in full force.

There is a revised version of a california initiative pending approval for the ballot here in Arizona, with a million some odd dollars coming from a california businessman, Ward Connerly. It may end up as Prop. 104.

Despite being an early supporter of citizens' initiatives style systems, I have lived to regret it every time I see how abusive big money can be of the system. With slick PR firms and lots of advertising cash to throw around they rarely represent a true grassroots initiative.

Excuse me David, but am I to understand that under the pro-affirmative action people's plan, affirmative action would simply become oriented services, like counseling or mentoring? Would there really be no consideration of race AT ALL? Does that mean that applications would no longer require information on a persons race, and for that matter would eliminate the (gender specific) name from all places that were not absolutely neccesary?

I think even I could get behind programs that simply offer targeted services for special needs of different communities. I never even considered this to be affirmative action. If (which I find hard to believe) all consideration of race and gender is removed from admissions policies, that's fine by me. Is it?

the only reason that pro-race based social engineering progressives are claiming that they really do not support quotas is that they have been caught so many times supporting quotas in the past.

In the last years, the School systems in Seattle and Louisville had to reminded by the Supreme Court that quotas are illegal and a violation of civil rights. Of course all of the supposed anti-quota left fully supported the Louisville, Ky School system in its not less than 15% and not more than 50% school policies. Of course, the supposed anti-quota progressives were in front of the Supreme Court arguing that race based points systems were a great policy and totally legal.

Until the newly minted anti-quota people denounced all of their past support for quotas, it is very hard to believe that they are really against quotas. What they seem to really want is a way to hide the quotas inside other programs.

It always seems strange that 50 years after Brown V Board of Ed, that it is the left that is fighting the reguard action to support separate and unequal.
