CNN and The Washington Post are currently reporting that Sen. Ted Kennedy (D – Mass) has a malignant brain tumor. This was apparently the cause of his seizure over the weekend. A biopsy was done and doctors are still working out the best course of treatment. At this point apparently surgery, radiation and chemo-therapy may all still be on the table.

Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat said tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe.

Our best wishes to Sen. Kennedy during this frightening time, and our thoughts and prayers go out to him, his family and friends. May he have a full and speedy recovery.

UPDATE: Senator John Kerry, who has known Kennedy for years and is Massachetts’ other Senator, has issued this statement:

Ted Kennedy and the Kennedy family have faced adversity more times, in more instances, with more courage and more determination and more grace than any family should ever have to face even just once.

“He’s helped millions and millions of people, in so many ways, at so many different times, from countless big pieces of legislation in Washington to the most personal of issues.

“Now, everybody needs to pull together on behalf of Ted. We must pull for him and his family and remember that Teddy is one unbelievable fighter.

“Over the weekend, I saw him and he’s in a fighting mood, and I’m confident that he will continue to draw strength from his tower of strength in Vicki, from each of his children and grandchildren, and from his unbelievably loving and caring family, both in Boston and from his extended family of Americans and people all over the world.

“I know that Ted is determined to fight this because he wants to continue his fight for the people of Massachusetts and he wants to continue to fight for everything that he believes in here in the United States Senate and throughout our country.

“Teresa’s and my prayers – and the prayers of a nation – are with my good friend and his family in these most trying of times.

Please, oh, please, Ted, before you're gone, publish those party memoirs! Talk about likely legendary memories...

DLS's comment is an example of how low the blog community can sink.
A funeral announcemtns would provide even greater opportunity to showcase one's wit, I'm sure.

To their credit, I've seen some civilized responses on event the most politically antagonistic blogs.

My thoughts are with the Kennedy clan.

"DLS's comment is an example of how low the blog community can sink."

No, but your reaction shows how slipshod things can get, that's for certain.

"A funeral announcemtns would provide even greater opportunity to showcase one's wit, I'm sure."

You're free to engage in that if that's your intention; it obviously isn't mine. Kennedy has lived a vigorous life and I wasn't enjoying a laugh at his expense, but marveling aloud at what he could tell us about what he's done that the rest of us can only dream or muse about. That it exceeds the conceptual or intellectual grasp of some isn't my shortcoming. [scowl]
