Former Secretary of State Colin Powell had some words of praise today for Democratic Senator Barack Obama on ABC. Via USA Today’s blog:
“I’m looking at all three candidates,” former secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, said during a pre-recorded interview with Diane Sawyer for today’s Good Morning America. “I know them all very, very well. I consider myself a friend of each and every one of them. And I have not decided who I will vote for yet.” Powell said some of the things said over the years by Rev. Jeremiah Wright are “deplorable,” and he praised the way Barack Obama has handled the controversy over the senator’s former pastor. “I think that Sen. Obama handled the issue well,” Powell said. “He didn’t look the other way. He didn’t wait for the, for the, you know, for the storm to go over. He went on television, and I thought, gave a very, very thoughtful, direct speech. And he didn’t abandon the minister who brought him closer to his faith.”
He doesn’t sound on the same wavelength as Rush, Sean or many conservatives. And if Obama is the nominee and (as expected) the GOP uses the Wright issue, could this be the year when Powell formally breaks with the GOP political establishment?
one thing is sure. With Powell seal of approval, about being patriotic and fit to lead, that will help him go after HRC in Keystone. plus is remarkable enquiries in DC with Paetreus , he is clearly a great stateman. McCain UNABLE TO SECURE AT THIS TIME OF THE RACE Powell vote , Clinton reminded that Obama does know how to lead a campaign whereas her own is at its 6 messages , minus 2 head chiefs , with a sniper attack climax is not going great aptitude. Go on Colin , and go on Condi because herself gave a fairly decent approval on Obama race speech. On this campaign, so far only one real speech/moment of history happened, and it was Obame. I cant say for the future but this is a great stateman.
For all I know, Powell will endorse Obama in the enc, as I hope.
In the meantime, in this particular statement, Powell used up a considerable number of words to say he likes all three candidates and is endorsing no one, as of now..
Any conlcusions drawn from that are strictly a matter of reading one's personal tarot deck.
McCain might have to have Condi as VP to get Powell's endorsement (I wanted Condi in 2004!).
Obama has the best voice, gives the best speeches — but has the worst big gov't voting record and supporting Saddam rather than American led regime change is terrible.
tomgrey
firstly, obama did not support saddam as you well know ; he simply expressed a doubt perceived by a majority of people on this planet
*removing saddam hussein was not solving bin laden pb
*would only get our records worse with the arab world
-was not helping in solving the israel-PLO pb
*was not going to solve afghanistan
etc etc
we end up with alqaeda in iraq and afghanistan , with our country a trillion in debt our military overstretched having to beg the french to send in some troops…
great results
the shia DESPISE US
the sunnis hate our guts
the world is wary of us and between you and me the american tourists get the cold shoulder
I am not in favor of govt spending but I certainly can do with an intelligent president dont you
good grief
bush 43 is the worst prez of all times
nothing to do with the fact he is republican, rather that the guy is a real dunce when it comes to real politik, foreign policy etc etc
we have 2 wars on our hands bush has relunctantly downplayed the Iran card
what would we say otherwise
that is not supporting saddam
that is simply being smart
and dont play the patriot please
getting our country into that mess is unatriotic ok and any one ready to cool off the madness is a true patriot to my standards
