Clinton Surrogate Ed Rendell (hearts) Fox News

Here’s the latest Clintonian trend: suck up to the right-wing media. As if it wasn’t enough that Hillary herself cozied up to Dick Scaife (and was cozied back), top Clinton surrogate Gov. Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania — he who thinks whites may not be ready for a black president — thinks the world of Fox News, claiming it is truly the fairest and most balanced of them all:

I think during this entire primary coverage, starting in Iowa and up to the present — FOX has done the fairest job, and remained the most objective of all the cable networks. You hate both of our candidates. No, I’m only kidding. But you actually have done a very balanced job of reporting the news, and some of the other stations are just caught up with Senator Obama, who is a great guy, but Senator Obama can do no wrong, and Senator Clinton can do no right.

So he said yesterday on Fox & Friends (via The Politico).

I’ll let Steve Benen translate: “Rendell’s argument seemed to be that Fox News is more negative towards Obama than the credible cable news networks, which therefore makes Fox News ‘fair,’ ‘objective,’ and ‘balanced.’”

Now, Hillary herself may not believe this — Steve thinks not, and he’s probably right. But the fact is, one of her key surrogates — an all-important Pennsylvania surrogate with national standing, a party celebrity — said it (and may think it, who knows?). And, of course, what he said was both biased and stupid. Biased because he equates objectivity with attacking Obama and stupid because everyone knows Fox News isn’t at all fair or balanced.

Now, in praising Fox News, Rendell makes Hillary look bad and gives the Republicans ammunition and immunity against Obama (as Will Bunch suggests). Of course, the Clinton campaign has given a great deal of anti-Obama ammunition to the Republicans in recent weeks — notably by questioning Obama’s experience and preparedness, but also by hurling the “kitchen sink” at him — but, in this case, should Hillary be held responsible for the biases and stupidities of her surrogate? Hard to say, but I would say yes, to a point. A campaign is more than the candidate, after all, and these surrogates are sent out to speak out on behalf of the candidate.

Obama took responsibility for Samantha Power, dismissing her shortly after her “monster” remark, whereas Hillary hardly took any responsibility at all, and only belatedly, for Geraldine Ferraro. Ferraro may or may not have been speaking only for herself, but she may very well have been voicing an opinion held by much of the Clinton campaign, namely, that Obama has only been successful because of his race. Similarly, Rendell may very well have been voicing a popular opinion in the Clinton campaign, namely, that the media establishment is propping up Obama and knocking down Hillary.

I suspect that Ferraro was speaking for herself more than Rendell was and that Rendell was voicing an opinion that is not just popular but widely-shared in the Clinton campaign. Think back to Hillary’s critique of Saturday Night Live. Indeed, the view of the media as supporting Obama over Hillary is a popular one among Hillary supporters — see Taylor Marsh and TalkLeft’s Big Tent Democrat, for example, both of whom, believe it or not, argue that Rendell is right.

Yes, this is what it has come to, the Clinton campaign — Hillary herself, her surrogates, her supporters — cozying up to the vast right-wing conspiracy, as Hillary once called it, and praising Fox News.

Think this is an April Fool’s joke? Think again.

    Pretty hilarious stuff.

Rendell hasn't done himself any favors nationally lately, though I can't speak for PA. But I've mentioned this before, specifically with regards to Taylor Marsh, TalkLeft, and other Hillary-centric web sites. It's really quite remarkable to me to see these guys consistently praising some of the most biased of Fox pundits any time they make anti-Obama statements. And you don't have to go "nutpicking" through the site comments to find it (though it's really over the top in there!). Nope, it's Taylor herself doing it. It's like reading Red State, or Free Republic at times. And somehow these guys believe the Fox attacks on Obama are proof the Republicans really are looking forward to going after him, as opposed to Hillary. They are so blinded by their support for Hillary they are unable to see what they have become.

But they do seem to be taking cues from the campaign. Hillary meets with Scaife, the Clinton campaign uses American Spectator articles to smear Obama surrogates, Rendell calls Fox the most fair and balanced, and on and on. It's not an April Fools joke, it's tragedy.
  • Lord whats the matter with you people.

You want to elect Barak Obama because he promises to be Moderate.

    Like Republicans.

    Get Along.

    Be happy.

Not treat the right as enemies.

But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. We all know based upon stories like this that if Hillary tries to get along with the Right wing. SHES SUCKING UP. BEING A TRAITOR. GOING OFF THE DEEP END.

Or as the op points out............Here’s the latest Clintonian trend: suck up to the right-wing media.

So this tells me one thing......The entire Barak Obama campaign is a lie. Their is no desire to make friends with the right, cozy up to those who are their opponents and to try and make peace and get along.

Barak Obama is defined by his supporters. His supporters clearly want WAR with Hillary and with the Right wing Evil.

Thanks for informing us of the true intent of the Barak Obama express to the White House. Enquiring minds want to know.

Whocares, you can get along and find common ground with reasonable opponents, but you can never be friends with rattlesnakes like Scaiffe.
  • but you can never be friends with rattlesnakes like Scaiffe.

    Really?

Barak Obama can get along with Iran and make them our buddies and strike a deal with them. He can Bring Ahmadinejad to the table and look into his soul and work out compromises.

But the party cant work with people like Scaiffe?

Why? Have we tried or have we so gone off the deep end that trying with Americans is harder then Making Iran our buddy?

I suggest that Hillary is the only moderate Democrat in this campaign. She has shown a willingness to work with Republicans. Compromise principals to vote her heart and conscience. Obama. He just votes party lines and proclaims himself a moderate.

With each passing day the puzzle that is the Obama bandwagon is becoming clearer and clearer. There is no desire to be moderate. No desire to work with the GOP. We just want to have a veto proof majority so we can cram it down their freakin throats. Those supporting Obama dont want to work with and be moderate. They want their agenda fulfilled and their writings are starting to show this disturbing trend.
  • Whocares -- in spite of myself, I'm starting to find the blanket attacks on people who support Barack Obama just a tad offensive. Have I said something specifically, or even generally, that fits your generalizations? If I have, can you help me understand where or how?

Polimom, I think this is how things work across the board with humans. Every "more extreme" view or action is taken as representative of one's opponent, while the more moderate views and actions are taken as representative of one's compatriots. Many American Christians and Jews view suicide bombers as representative of Islam, while they see only charity donations and spiritual support among the actions of other Christians. Many Muslims are sure that Christians sit around planning the next Crusade and only see amazing memories of participating in the Hajj among Muslims. Many liberals think Ann Coulter is representative of conservativism, while many conservatives think liberals sit around planning tea parties for Hugo Chavez. It's not that you can't find extreme people in the opposing camp, but it's the willingness to see only the extreme that is the mistake.

I'm not exactly sure what causes us to do this. Part of it might be the need to categorize the world (truly a fundamental need and one of our greatest human assets) and therefore to focus upon differences. Part of it might be a natural reaction to attacks. If two jocks beat me up in school and I have no experience with the 200 other jocks who are decent people, I might start thinking of jocks as people who beat people up. Similarly, if a person supports Clinton, such as in this case, then attacks on her will always take more notice than a lack of attack from everyone else who happens to disagree. The attacks are not in fact representative of people who disagree with Clinton, but they are more often than not taken that way.

I am dismayed by WhoCares. I cannot even understand his first pot in this thread.

I guess it attacks Obama and his supporters?

Polimom makes a good point, which I would expand upon here. There are anti-Obama Blogs where you can scream to your heart's content and find company in denouncing Obama.

Taylor Marsh would be perfect fit for bluster and sarcasm.

And Talk Left is Hillary Clinton dot com, with the added hilarity that the biggest and most consistent critic of Obama and everything about Obama the man and candidate, the blogger there who calls himself Big Tent Democrat, attacks Obama several times a day while maintaining a public stance that he "favors" Obama.

This post by Michael Stickings has enfuriated Big Tent, even though what Mr. Stickings writes is accurate. Big Tent believes that we do not see his nuanced attack on Obama and endless excusing and praise and campaigning for Hillary as support for Obama and quiet dispassionate realism.

It is all quite comical. I love The Moderate Voice because it is moderate and bloggers and commenters try to speak honestly. Please tamp down your sarcasm WhoCares. There are (as I said) so many sites that welcome such talk. Why post it here?
  • Polimom am I responding to your comments?

I find it very revealing that Obama supporters biggest claim is that Barak Obama wants to be moderate and a Uniter and yet here are people like Mr. Strickings posting positions like this that is an attack upon Hillary for attempting to talk to the other side and illicit some support.

This is revealing because Barak as part of the broader democratic strategy would not participate in Fox news sponsored debates and yet fall all over themselves for debates held by the Obama rooting MSNBC. This again is revealing for a candidate who purports to be a Moderate. Uniter. Candidate of change who will bring Republicans over to "Our Side."

He wont even talk to Fox news. How is this a sign of a moderate, Uniter?

So the candidate who was Barak Obama when he threw his hat in the ring was one thing. His supporters have turned him into something entirely different. It is the supporters of Barak Obama who are driven to destroy Hillary. They seemingly will stop at nothing.

These supporters as I see them will stop at nothing to win. Winning is everything.

This is not Obama doing this. This is his supporters.

This post was SURROGATES. Polimom. This is a discussion about SURROGATES fighting the political battles. That was what I addressed. Sorry that you feel offended by what I perceive as the truth about the surrogate battles of this primary.

The problem, WhoCares, in even your most recent comment is that you keep describing this as revealing something about the nature of Obama supporters. I myself, polimon (I gather), Paul Silver and Pete Abel (I believe), and many others on the site are all Obama supporters who have engaged in very little of the actions you claim represent Obama supporters. If you simply said, "Michael Stickings, I disagree with you vehemently for this reason and that reason," there would be little debate. Michael represents Michael.

Instead you keep talking about the supporters of Barack Obama trying to destroy Hillary, stopping at nothing, have no desire to work with the GOP, just want to cram things down people's throats, etc.. (I am taking items from your comments above.) Again, you can make these arguments about Michael's posts, if you so wish, but people on this web site who have clearly supported Obama have also clearly argued they hope for compromise, they hope to unite others, they are excited by the draw of Obama towards some Republicans, etc. Essentially some supporters of Obama are hoping for the exact things that you claim Obama supporters hate. In short (yeah right, like I ever write short stuff), the basic problem is that you are taking the views from some Obama supporters that you most disagree with and claiming this is what Obama supporters are like, when it clearly is not the case.

My posts are intended to be slaps in the face. Those who are moderate are not standing up for Moderate values.

Barak Obama wants to be a moderate. He wants to be inclusive and his supporters do not. I am calling ALL of you to task on this.

IF indeed this is your positions then you should stand up for and be counted. You should be on those who are being hate Hillary like pigs on slop.

I find you are not. You being the collective majority of Barak Obama supporters. This is my contention and if blanket statements meant to reproach 90 percent of those vocal and politically active seems to cover the innocent then unfortunately one should simply step up to the plate and stand up and be counted.

I am a Hillary Clinton Supporter. I stepped up to the plate and wrote her an open letter to step down for the good of the party. I dont like it. I wanted her to be the nominee but Im willing to step up for whats best for this party and for America.

I find 95 percent of the Obama supporters are not willing to step up to the plate and embrace his MODERATE, lets all get along and become friends again campaign. What I find in reading their discourses is anything but moderate.

So I have two bits of advice. If you indeed want to be moderate then you need to write that. Show that. Stop calling Hillary names damnit. We have had enough of that this last 5 years.

Its time to step up to the plate and demand that Obama be the moderate that he claims but even more so that those who support this BE THE MODERATE THAT THEY CLAIM.

Until I see evidence of this I will continue pointing fingers and calling people out and asking them to defend their inciting rhetoric.
  • tjproudamerican
    dear WhoCares

    You write:

"My posts are intended to be slaps in the face."

Did YOU ever listen to someone who slapped you in the face? Do you require that slap before you listen. Do you think slapping is acceptable?

    I don't. Sorry, old chum.

The only "inciting rhetoric" here is yours. And, really, Talk Left and Taylor Marsh are always hiring pro-Hillary comments, especially "slaps to the face" of Obama and anyone who isn't pro-Hillary.
