Prof. Marty Defends Rev. Wright

Professor Martin Marty’s full comment on Trinity United’s former pastor can be found here.

And just who the heck is Martin Marty?

Andrew Sullivan writes that he knows “of few more distinguished, principled or decent public figures.”

Martin Marty is one of my heroes, among the most consequential religious thinkers of the past fifty years. He spoke at my seminary graduation. I'll read his remarks eagerly.

It is truly amazing how liberals and media have dedicated themselves to rehabilitating the reputation of Wright. Were it not that this rehabilitation is essential to Obama's chances to attain the presidency, I doubt so many would care.

It does seem as if a Standard Wright Defense Template is circulating, however: "Of course, I don't condone Wright's outrageous conspiracy theories with regard to AIDs...but we must understand...."

We have seen this template emerge from the Left innumerable times in recent decades, in defense of everything from Stalin, to Mao, the Che Guevara.

Curiously, however, the same appeal for understanding is never ever extended to anyone not favoured by the Left. ... where any comment out of the ordinary excites sweeping unequivocal condemnation.

Remember Rumsfeld's "Stuff happens" comment about the looting in Iraq.
    Rage, rage...demands for resignation..outrage.

Wright, Obama's friend and mentor for 2 decades, claims AIDs is a conspiracy by Whites against Blacks.
    "We must understand and forgive..."

Marlowecan -- The right does the same thing. And by the way, I'm not a lefty. And I'm still defending Obama and Wright.

Well I can't help but defend a guy when everyone on FOX starts to hate on him. This guy has been around for a long time and I just can't believe he's the America hating black power thug they are trying to make him out to be. Obama and Oprah are connected to the church for crying out loud. And who knows what other reasonable folks. Wright was a marine as well so he's earned his right to say what he wants and we can disagree about things and still not hate eachother.
