Out of sight…out of mind. Working on this old adage Britain intends to push the cigarettes under the counter. The Times reports: “Cigarettes are to be forced beneath shop counters with supermarkets and cornershops banned from displaying tobacco products.
“The latest assault on smokers will also see the disappearance of vending machines from pubs and restaurants in an attempt to further limit children’s access to tobacco. Both measures are to be included in a consultation to be launched later this spring. Legislation, if needed, could be introduced this autumn.”
I have mixed thoughts about smoking. I agree that we should make the habit difficult to acquire. But not all smoking is habitual and unwelcome. I occasionally smoke cigars and miss the opportunity to join with others in a pleasing indoor venue to indulge with fine beverages and entertainment. This has been outlawed in my community.
I'm all for keeping smokes away from kids, but its getting pretty out of hand here in good ole CA. In the new office building my company moved to the only smoking areas available are 2 little alcoves in the underground parking garage. Literally I am smoking in a cement underground box with bars that light shines in through. Up top there are fountains, benches, some grassy areas, but no smoking allowed anywhere there. Basically its got me so irritated I want to lash out by air dropping free smokes on elementary schools and wearing a cape or something. Crazy thought, crazy ones.
