Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia are reportedly prepared to grant fugitive NSA leaker Edward Snowden asylum, but can he ever get there?
ABC News: “The accused NSA leaker has been stuck in the transit area of Moscow’s Sheremedevo International Airport for nearly two weeks, with no way to enter Russia, no valid U.S. passport to travel on because the United States revoked it, and no route to safe haven that avoids a U.S. extradition treaty.”
The Wall Street Journal reports that a senior U.S. official said that the invitations “appeared at this point to be symbolic, because Mr. Snowden’s fate still largely depends on the Russian government.”
One way Edward Snowden can leave Moscow is if some wealthy Wikileaks supporter brings a private jet to Sheremetyevo International Airport to fly him out of Russia. They would have to find a route, with refueling stops, that avoids air space over countries that would deny him entry. We know he most likely can’t take a commercial flight because of overflight restrictions. That means airlines would deny him boarding. There’s also the far-fetched possibility that another country could issue him a passport. The citizenship effort failed in Iceland, but could that be an option for Nicolas Maduro or Evo Morales to explore?
