On Saturday, Andrew Sullivan posted a “Quote for the Day” from David Mamet, which he (Sullivan) picked up via “Monday Morning Clacker” writing at greenmountainpolitics1. In turn, “Clacker” took the quote from a New York magazine interview with the famed playwright.
During these dog days of January, the quote that Sullivan and Clacker zeroed in on is a great reminder about just how miraculous the US of A is and why we should celebrate it. But that quote is not the only priceless nugget from the interview with Mamet. Others include his takes on …
Politics and war: “No plan ever outlives the first encounter with the enemy.”
Directing a Ford commercial: “I did it for the money. Why do you think I did it?”
The primaries: ” … if there were the two candidates, McCain and Obama, either of them would probably make a hell of a president.”
OK, yes, I admit it: I included that last one because I happen to agree with him. Regardless, I’d encourage you to read the entire interview. Mamet’s perspective is as frequently refreshing as it is unconventional.
Politics and war: “No plan ever outlives the first encounter with the enemy.”
You do realize that this is not an original quote from Mamet?
Cosmoetica — I confess my ignorance; I did not recognize the quote as non-original. If you check back in here and can enlighten me, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll humbly Google the quote.
OK: I both Googled that quote and checked Bartlett's and am not coming up with anything other than references to Mamet. Any direction you can provide would be appreciated. I'll then update accordingly. Thanks.
