Why I Am Voting for Mitt Romney (Update)

Oct 22, 2012 by

UPDATE:

Even though this piece was posted as “Comedy” elsewhere, I was amazed at the number of readers — from both sides — who took my reasons for voting for Mr. Romney (even on Nov. 7!) seriously.

One of my reasons for voting for Romney was that “While our nation was in the depths of an economic and financial crisis, Romney had the clairvoyance and business instinct to support saving the auto industry and to oppose the Wall Street bailouts.”

In a weekend piece in the New York Times (“The Secret of our Non-Success”), Paul Krugman confirms the economic/financial brilliance and straightforwardness of Romney and his Republican chorus.

Which brings us to Krugman’s closing comments:

And once politicians start refusing to acknowledge inconvenient facts, where does it stop? Why, the next thing you know Republicans will start rejecting the overwhelming evidence for man-made climate change. Oh, wait.

Original Post:

I am a Democrat.

I voted for Barack Obama in 2008.

However, this time — after a lot of soul searching and closely examining both candidates and the issues — I have decided to vote for Mitt Romney.

Here is why.

Because of Romney’s strong support for every Obama administration proposal designed to lift our country from the deep economic and financial crisis it has found itself in during the past four years.

Because I know exactly where Romney stands on important issues. For example, his steadfast position on abortion and other women’s issues, his gracious acceptance of an offered binder full of women and his promise to get back with us on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

His principled, rock-solid, unchanging positions on immigration and path to citizenship, gun policy, embryonic stem cell research, his no-tax pledge and so many other important issues.

I respect how quickly and fully he shared with the American people every aspect of his personal finances for the past decade, his openness and transparency on all his tax, financial and investment matters.

I admire his stated commitment to 100 percent of Americans, including the 47 percent — retirees, veterans, the disabled and the working poor — who have a hard time making ends meet and, therefore, cannot pay their share of taxes.

I admire his record of acquiring companies, turning a profit, discarding those companies and giving their employees the opportunity to find even better career opportunities elsewhere.

I was especially taken by how Romney immediately came to the support of the President after — even during — a recent national tragedy and how he set politics aside for a while.

I found it thoughtful and compassionate of the former governor of Massachusetts to want to share with all Americans a health care plan that worked so well for the people in the state of Massachusetts.

While our nation was in the depths of an economic and financial crisis, Romney had the clairvoyance and business instinct to support saving the auto industry and to oppose the Wall Street bailouts.

For his solid performance on international issues and the favorable impression he has made on our allies — on the world — during his foreign excursions.

For his sound, specific proposals on how to intervene in Syria, how to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and for taking action in other hot spots and crises around the world and for his fresh ideas for ending the Afghanistan War in ways so different and so much more effective from what the present administration is pursuing.

I have studied and I believe in his detailed, crystal clear plans to rebound our economy, to cut taxes by $5 trillion, increase our defense budget, create 12 million jobs over the next four years without adding to the deficit. (How can anyone not vote for this man?)

I admire Mr. Romney’s patriotism evidenced by his rejoicing every time the unemployment figures have come down, when gas prices came down and every time an economic indicator improved. Also, his obvious disappointment and constructive comments when things went the other way.

I am excited about how Romney will protect, preserve and conserve our precious environment and invest in clean, renewable energy.

As a retired military, I was touched by his laser-like focus during the Republican National Convention on our military and on the Afghanistan war — a conflict where our troops continue to fight and die in.

Finally, having seen Mitt Romney stand firm on his core beliefs, his principles — never wavering, never changing, never hesitating throughout the Republican primaries and now during the last weeks of campaigning and debating — whether his audiences consist of right wing Evangelicals, Tea Party members, Latinos, moderates and independents or just a roomful of wealthy Boca Raton donors, I am convinced that what I see in Mitt Romney the candidate is what I’ll get in Mitt Romney the President.

That, and more, is why I will for vote for Romney on November 7.

Added:

CODA: I will vote for Romney, unless a cure is found by November 6 for an ailment that is afflicting so many of us. An ailment called “Romnesia”

Thank you. I needed a Friday chuckle.

Here’s the Presidents explanation of the symptoms of ‘Romnesia’

  3. ShannonLeee

    Lance Armstrong for President!

  4. slamfu

That was funny the first few paragraphs. Then as I kept reading and remember that somehow this race is a dead heat, it got depressing. Not your fault DDW, just there is only so much satire in stating cold hard facts.

  5. sometimes

    Thanks for the laugh!

    “Romnesia”

What a great one-word reminder of what the GOP and the GOP candidate are all about and what a great speech.

    Thanks for the video, SteveK

And all others, glad it made your day :)

  7. sheknows

Hilarious!! I made a copy of this article to show to a Republican friend of mine and he said ” yes, that’s EXACTLY why I am voting for Romney as well…may I keep this?”

  8. Rambie

LOL, you had me there for a few seconds! LOL

Scary thing is, I know too many people with Romnesia…

  9. DORIAN DE WIND, Military Affairs Columnist

Is that really true, sheknows? How funny :)

  10. sheknows

DDW sadly, it is true. I was roaring..but he didn’t find it all that funny. He thinks there are some “valid points” in there.

  11. CStanley

Oy, you need to hang around some smarter Republicans.

Slamfu- the race is a dead heat because I could mirror this column by writing “Why I plan to Vote For Obama”

  12. sheknows

DDW I think you should send this to Jon Stewart. It’s beautiful!

  13. DORIAN DE WIND, Military Affairs Columnist

    Hi Sheknows.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it would be a flop because — as you discovered — too many people would take it as the Gospel according to Mitt.

Here’s a segment of the last debate that doesn’t seem to be getting much attention:

President Obama lists his first term accomplishments

  15. isaac_schneider

Work has gone from full weeks, to 1-2 days every two weeks. The economy isn’t working, and I’m not working.

    Not bad, DDW.

    Dorian, great post!

    SteveK, thanks for the links.

  18. sheknows

Hi CStanley I am afraid that “smarter Republicans” is a contradiction in terms. Thanks SteveK for the link.

    fun read…thanks

  20. StockBoyLA

SteveK, by the way… there seems to be a bit of Bill Clinton’s speech style coming out in Obama. Good.

  21. everythings_gravy

Wow, and you are a senior citizen to boot. Obama is the first US president to inherit 2 wars with a recession and Out of Control Deficit Spending for 2 wars,
1 war which can be considered bogus.

Romney has not revealed 10 yrs of Tax Returns, Draft dodger on a mission with what can be considered a religious cult, Potential Felon for lying about his Bain Capital tenure which indulged in job outsourcing and eliminating US based manufacturing jobs, has an illegal 100 million dollar IRA parked somewhere between hell and purgurtory, while Gov of Mass the state was 47th in the Nation
in job creation and a collapsing infrastructure which was a danger to the health safety and welfare of the state, he claims he balanced the budget however this was done primarily because he raised state fees on everything and attempted to outsource most state government agency, he states that once he is office he will
destroy 37000 green jobs and millions of peripheral jobs, he has a Cayman Island
bank account with 100′s of millions of dollars to avoid paying taxes accumulated during the Bushwhacked years, he wants Senior Citizens who have paid into Medicare for years to beg the US government of medical vouchers a system ripe for abuse and corruption, Romney and his family used Adolescent question begging epitaphs to insult the President of the United States, he lacks character and conviction constantly flip flopping to appease anyone like a used car salesmen,
his whole family are generational cowards not one has enlisted in the military,
he wants to enact legislature to control women bodily functions, he is bellicose
and argumentative to the point where there is no information exchange, he wants to provide more tax breaks for the rich and get this to start a Trickle down economy which does not work in Modern day America there is no manufacturing base
mentality in America, he wants to destroy Middle Income families and retrain them, he wants college students to borrow money from their families which is unrealistic this by the way will destroy american ingenuity, AND WE ALL KNOW THAT IF HE DODGE THE DRAFT THE MOST PATRIOTIC THING HE COULD DO IS PAY HIS FAIR SHARE OF TAXES AND STOP HIDING BEHING CHARATABLE GIVING TO HIS CULT LIKE MORMON CHURCH on top of the fact the he misrepresents facts on a weekly basis, and you still want to vote for this draft dodging, lyin, tax cheatin spoiled brat?….who has dismissed you as a 47% er. GOOD GOD

  22. ordinarysparrow

Dorian did you forget Romney’s deep concern for the poor? in that his Vice President is willing to wash the pots and pans in the homeless shelters?

  23. CStanley

Well it seems that Republicans aren’t the only ones who are unable to detect satire

  24. DORIAN DE WIND, Military Affairs Columnist

    Hi everythings-gravy.

I don’t know if your comments are satire (too), but in case they aren’t you may want to look closely at the date I’ll be voting for Mr. Romney, if I haven’t recovered from “Romnesia” and at the CODA.

Also, pls read CS comment right above and I just pray he/she is not correct.

    Edited to add/modify:

My comments didn’t come out quite right, everythings-gravy.

I know you didn’t mean your comments to be satire and you are generally correct in what you say, but please read mine again — carefully

    Thanks

“Dorian did you forget Romney’s deep concern for the poor? in that his Vice President is willing to wash the pots and pans in the homeless shelters?”

Hi Os, I thought I addressed my admiration for Mr. Romney in this area during my 100 and 47 percent comment.

But, yes, that was very commendable of Mr. Ryan. Those pots and pans that received that second, extra, unsolicited, perfunctory “show” washing have never felt so clean and so “used” — and neither has the shelter ever felt so used and humiliated.

  26. DR. CLARISSA PINKOLA ESTÉS, Managing Editor of TMV, and Columnist

Hi there all: Going to be posting this on several posts over the next couple weeks, some in answer to recent questions from readers.

Please stay to the topic of the post and not what you think of other commenters or writers. If you agree or not with the topic, state your case with your facts. We dont keep the comments area for what any commenter ‘mind reads’ another commenter or writer is thinking, whether any commenter thinks another commenter is having a moral failing, or is blind as a bat, or whatever other off-topic fantasy.

I encourage you, if you havent lately, or ever… to read the Commenters’ Rules, especially TMV’s policy for dealing with offtopic remarks, attacks on commenters, writers, highjacking of topic of the post, incivility, and so on. You can read too about our policy on editing and deleting comments, and banning. The Commenters’ Rules are at the top of the home page.

The TMV comments area for the last year has been often read not only by those who comment, but by others who read comments without ever posting. That has to do with our commenters not only telling and discussing, but also teaching here about their own lives and about matters they know much about– you all have done a great job at this. Many of our own commenters write to tell us so. To encourage teaching in the comments area has been a goal of mine for the comments area, and I see it often come to fruition especially in the last year and a half.

Additionally, the comments area is often highly readable because our commenters remain civil and most often keep their personal feelings about other commenters’ ways of being, out of it.

We appreciate that most know and follow that: If a commenter wants to mind read or flash-fight another commenter, a civil discussion is not the place for that. That will be taken offline. And if those two or more who want to do their own uncivil thing with one another via email or elsewhere, they are welcome to it. But not here.

One more item in response to questions about it. Occasionally, some commenters address a specific commenter by name, seemingly wanting to debate or challenge or elicit a response from that person. Or makes untoward remarks toward another commenter, also by using their name, often at the top of their comment(s). There is no requirement because a commenter addresses you by your screen name or actual name, that you have to reply. You can pursue your own course as you wish within the very few TMV rules. You can engage or ignore another commenter who solicits you by name for ill or good, as you wish.

Lastly: Just my .02, the discussions and teaching here in the comments area of TMV over the last many months are way more meaty in content and in usable ideas and insightful facts (and sometimes filled with good humor) than ANY I have seen in the so-called debates between politicians in the last few weeks.

I keep thinking how sharp the debates could be if YOU were one of the debaters. Your facts and especially your living stories of those facts that you’ve offered us here, way way outdistance generalized political rhetoric. That’s not to say you arent weird and strange and wondrous like the rest of us: You most often are.

    Continuan.

    Thanks.

Be careful Mr. De Wind that you don’t contract any other FTDs (fox-transmitted diseases) like “ryanopia,” the incapacity to acknowledge past held positions. ;)

    Anybody But Obama!

  29. Thanks…really enjoyed this.

  30. The_Ohioan

    You the man, DDW

  31. Rcoutme

For those who missed it: the Presidential election is on Nov. 6th, Mr. De Wind plans to vote for Romney on the 7th. That was subtle, but very prescient on his part.

  32. StockBoyLA

I was amazed at the number of readers — from both sides — who took my reasons for voting for Mr. Romney (even on Nov. 7!) seriously.

I think if someone lives in the fantasy who believes those reasons to vote for Romney and believes that voting takes place on Nov. 7, then I’ll certainly let them live in that world and let them vote on Nov. 7. I don’t make it a habit of getting between an insane person and his beliefs. It’s always a losing cause. :)
