Good but Impossible Advice?

“Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.” – Will Rogers

——————-

OK, I know, that one reaches way, way back. And I also have to confess that I found it today on a source so pedestrian I’m almost embarrassed to admit it, but I will anyway: Google’s “Quote of the Day” feature. But hey, it’s still a great quote, and one that suggests a standard so incredibly high I doubt any of us could say, “Yeah, I’m comfortable with that.”

Sorry, the advice does not work for me.

Precisely because it’s so important to toe the line of civility in public, there needs to be a private space where a person can just vent without logic, let off steam without regard to appearances – just let it all hang out.
What only the parrtot hears can be very therapeutic, and it can also be enlightening. The folly of what one has said becomes more apparent when ti’s quoted back at you. by a parrot.
I highly recommend a private parrot for shaking out the cobwebs of the mind and for fine tuning one’s self image.
Of course, to save on bird seed money and prevent the parrot’s blabbing to visitors, I find it more satisfacory to just wiite my thoughts down on scraps of papaer tha are available for my eyes only.
On the other hand, a parrot is cheaper than a psychiatrist. I may have to reconsider.

Rogers’ truism kinda reminds me of my favorite line from the I Ching:

“You can only judge your life from the effects it produces.”

Yes, domajot- I agree with you.

But I’d LOVE to sell my parrot to the town gossip…. he’d deserve it. :)
