Todd Akins Clarifies ‘Legitimate Rape’ Comment, Now Says Women Make ‘False Claims’ About Being Raped
Rep. Todd Akin continues to dig himself deeper in the ‘legitimate rape’ fall-out. He clarified his despicable remark by saying women make ‘false claims’ about being raped. He said the following on Mike Huckabee’s show:
Think Progress: You know, Dr. Willke has just released a statement and part of his letter, I think he just stated it very clearly. He said, of course Akin never used the word legitimate to refer to the rapist, but to false claims like those made in Roe v. Wade and I think that simplifies it….. There isn’t any legitimate rapist…. [I was] making the point that there were people who use false claims, like those that basically created Roe v. Wade.

And Rep voters can vote for him with a clean conscious.
Many Republican voters will go to the polls and vote for every position except the senate race. Not all Republicans are stupid red neck racists, so many will not need to worry about voting with a “clean conscious”.
Republican can just add this race to the sure wins in Nevada and Delaware.
However, there has been accusations that Akin won the nomination due to the Democrat Party money and influence in the election. This is a good example of why open primaries should never be allowed. If you belong to one party, then that is the party you should be choosing a candidate. If you do not have strong opinions and do not want to state a party affiliation, then you should have no input into either parties candidacy.
So, you can blame the Tea Party for the candidate, but reading articles on how Akin got the nomination indicates there were some democrats that helped.
“So, you can blame the Tea Party for the candidate, but reading articles on how Akin got the nomination indicates there were some democrats that helped”
????
Haha! He also is now accusing his critics of “overreacting”. I was just thinking how what this giant ball of rape apologia needed was a good, old-fashioned, accusation of us ladybrainz getting our panties in a twist over nothing. So thank you, Mr. Akin, for completing the circle here.
If Akin stays in the race, people are going to be shocked at his numbers. I’m telling you folks, he may still win.
So I can buy his misspeak about “legitimate” as a context thing, a grammar slip. But the “natural defenses against pregnancy during rape”? That’s just pure horse-hockey, there’s no “grammar error” there. Ludicrous and stupid. As is illegalizing abortion, by his own admission the desperate will find a way (which is part of the reason the ruddy practice was legalized in the first place).
This guy is too stupid to be in the Sen … Wait, what am I saying? He’s perfect!
Apparently he meant to say some women make false claims of rape, which is well documented but a very small percentage of all rapes, but decided to expand that to say that even those that don’t make false claims can’t get pregnant during a rape to bolster his position of anti-abortion. That expansion is his real problem. The physician he’s relying on has made up out of whole cloth that theory. There are situations where women’s fertility is diminished, but that is because of physical deterioration from causes such as starvation, like the 900 days of Leningrad or the Dutch Hunger Winter. The latter is the subject of an impressive study on the effect on the fetus of too little food during pregnancy which all those who want to cut food stamps should be required to read.

The national Democratic Party did funnel money to Akin’s campaign hoping to increase Ms. McCaskill’s ability to win the election with him as an opponent. I’m sure they hoped for but never believed he would blow up his campaign so effectively. Now they will have to live with the possibility that Mr. Akin will receive so much money and support on the ground that he prevails. The Democrats will probably increase that support by going to ridiculous lengths in tarring every Republican candidate with the same stupidity brush Mr. Adin has wielded.
More important than this piddly excuse for a candidate is the Republican Party platform which still (since 2004) opposes abortion even in the case of rape or incest. Their aim to eventually overturn Roe v Wade is clear enough for even those who will hold their nose and vote for any or all Republican candidates to understand. There can be no excuse later about being misinformed while they were voting.
The statement that Akin made was an attempt to justify his belief in a complete ban on abortion in all circumstances (With the possible exception of the life of the mother.). Given that this position is shared by enough Republicans to be a continuing part of their platform it doesn’t take that much work to make a link.
“The national Democratic Party did funnel money to Akin’s campaign hoping to increase Ms. McCaskill’s ability to win the election with him as an opponent.”
That is really, really freaking stupid of them, in my opinion.
I’m curious what Rep. Akins stance would be on this issue if his wife was raped and impregnated. Would he want to raise that child? Would he be ok with the federal government telling him he had no choice in the matter? The mere idea to me that anyone would presume to make that decision for another person is horrifying. What sick mindset gives someone that kind of self righteous arrogance, and yet presumes to call itself a believer in freedom.
The Ohioan..Thanks for backing up my comment concerning the Democrat Party funneling money to Akin. I doubt this was the first time and most likely will not be the last.
Open primaries IMO should not be allowed as this type of manipulation can have consequences that are counter productive for the country. This just shows how the political paries are not looking out for the country, they are just looking out for their own interest.
@Shannon : I agree completely. I suspect you and I have had similar experiences with the extremists. I would be not surprised if this ended up being a ‘rallying call’, if it isn’t already for Religious Righteous voters

I don’t like open primaries, either, but that only affects voters. Money can, and does, go anywhere – kinda like water.
roro
I think it’s stupid, also, but this is what our politics have come to – money is king and it is to be spent wherever some dope thinks it will do some good. It may have backfired this time. $1.5 mil according to this account.

Here’s another:
Fueled with $43,000 in secret money, Republican Rep. David Rivera helped run a shadow campaign that might have broken federal laws in last week’s Democratic primary against his political nemesis Joe Garcia, according to campaign sources and finance records.

And here in Michigan, we had the same thing, Rep running as Dem and some hanky panky at the state level.
