Rep. Steve King on Rep. Todd Akin: Never Heard of a Girl Getting Pregnant from Statutory Rape or Incest

Aug 21, 2012 by

GOP House wingnut Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is coming to embattled Rep. Todd Akin’s rescue. You will recall Akin is under fire for saying ‘legitimate rape rarely leads to pregnancy,’ now King’s comments go a step further — he has never heard of a girl getting pregnant from statutory rape or incest. Um, this man said he will play a prominent role in the Romney-Ryan administration. One wingnut backing another. SMH.

Talking Points Memo:  Rep. Steve King, one of the most staunchly conservative members of the House, was one of the few Republicans who did not strongly condemn Rep. Todd Akin Monday for his remarks regarding pregnancy and rape. King also signaled why — he might agree with parts of Akin’s assertion.

King told an Iowa reporter he’s never heard of a child getting pregnant from statutory rape or incest.

“Well I just haven’t heard of that being a circumstance that’s been brought to me in any personal way,” King told KMEG-TV Monday, “and I’d be open to discussion about that subject matter.”

The tie between statutory rape and teen pregnancy has been the subject of ad campaignsfrom groups like United Way.

H.R. 3, the bill co-sponsored by King, Akin and Paul Ryan in 2011, originally called for an exemption in the federal ban on abortion funding only in the case of “forcible rape.” That language was dropped after pressure from women’s advocates and Democrats. At the time, the Republican sponsors of the legislationweren’t too interested in discussing their reasoning for the wording.

From one Republican jack ass to the next. Shameful attack on women’s rights in this country, courtesy of the Tea Party favorites. I bet the Republicans wish all they had to deal with was the Sea of Galilee skinny-dipping scandal!

  1. The ignorance being brought to light is appalling. 13% in MO agree with Akin’s statement. Now King. It may not be a requirement, but you have an ethical/moral duty to your constituents to at least be modestly informed. These people are co-sponsoring bills on the subject when they are utterly ignorant of the facts. I just don’t have the words to express my amazement at this in 21st century America.

Same here. Pretty much since the start of the GOP primary season it seems at least once a week some republican has been more than happy to provide a staggering example of ignorance and absurdity. My personal favorite is still Newt Gingrich stating that anyone who quotes him is a liar though. That one is going to be wearing the crown for the foreseeable future. Although Mittens has been trying really hard to knock it off that pedestal. Who knows what the next few weeks will bring.

This does not surprise me. I wonder why? This is the guy who wants to introduce a bill that sets all United States legislature back to Januray 19, 2009. That could be one of his zaniest ideas, it’s hard to tell because there are so many – suggesting Obama’s mother telegraphed his birth announce to Hawaii from Kenya, for one, and this statement “While most local animal shelters perform commendable services in their local communities, the national HSUS(Humane Society of the US) organization is run by vegetarians with an extreme anti-meat agenda” (this may be connected to his fight to allow Americans to legally watch dog-fighting).

Ignorance or greed for power… to get a fuller view of this one needs to go back to the powerful religious right lobby… these guys are puppets of the Religious Right….

Fear what is happening here is much more malignant than ignorance…

Keep trying to see the bigger pattern here… it is more than ignorance….

Janet, i know many may see The Nation too left, but this article on The Danger of Laughing at Todd Akins, clarifies lots for me…
    Excerpt….
” Akin’s comments appear an awful lot like step one in the GOP’s favorite two-step tactic to redefine the world around us: first, more extreme figures voice opinions that would never fly from more politically palatable ones. The right-wing echo chamber picks up those opinions in the guise of news coverage. Then, the more politically acceptable candidates shift their rhetoric to acknowledge the newly accepted opinion as reality.

Consider our seemingly uncontrollable slide towards climate catastrophe: in 2006 and 2007, the link between human activity and climate change was almost incontestable. Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth was a breakout hit; and the former VP was rewarded for his leadership on the global issue with a Nobel Prize in 2007. In 2008, both McCain and Obama openly acknowledged the existence of the threat and the need for action. Scientists breathed a collective sigh of relief that the US might finally exert some leadership on this existential issue.

But when the Obama victory made the idea of a clean-energy economy a potential reality, the climate deniers kicked into high gear. Cash from the Koch brothers poured into bogus organizations to promote climate skepticism and cast doubt on the scientific consensus. Senator Inhofe called climate change “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.” A 2009 Chamber of Commerce ad buy brutalized House Democrats who voted for the climate legislation. In the lead up to the climate summit of 2009, someone even hacked into a University server and published highly edited e-mails from climate scientists to make them appear to be fabricating their results. While the scientists were exonerated, the damage was done.”

It’s a mercy William F. Buckley is no longer around to bear witness to this barrage of idiocy.

  8. It’s their belief that the only “true” knowledge is found in the Bible. Of course there’s nothing in the Bible about abortion. They are ignorant in the sense they just don’t look anywhere else. I think this applies to both King and Akin. They are true believers.

“Of course there’s nothing in the Bible about abortion.”

That’s not entirely true. I found one passage the I found illuminating. Exodus Chapter 21.

“21:22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
21:23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life
21:24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
21:25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. ”

See what they did there? The fetus that dies as a result is not counted as mischief. The penalty is a fine determined by husband. However if in the fight someone is killed or injured then they shall be killed and injured similarly. Essentially it is clear to me God does not consider a fetus of equal legal stature to a person.
