Egyptians Elect MB Islamist Morsi

Even though the military will retain most of the power, I expect that minorities, Christian and otherwise, will flee Egypt shortly.

Washington Post:

Egypt’s electoral commission announced Sunday that Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi would be sworn in as president, becoming the Arab world’s first elected Islamist head of state after more than a year of popular uprisings that ousted autocrats and fueled the rise of political Islam in the region.

Although Egypt’s ruling generals blunted the power of the presidency shortly after polls closed last weekend, Morsi’s victory represented a remarkable turn of fortunes. The organization was outlawed and systematically suppressed for decades, including under the three-decade regime of deposed former president Hosni Mubarak.

LOL Lets not Arabs have elections, they might choose someone who worries about their self interest. maybe the Saudis will use their US bought military to overthrow this election. Of course non-Arabs and non-Islamists have rights in Mecca.

I’m assuming that last sentence was a bit tongue in cheek Rudi ?

Being as how non Muslims are forbidden to even enter Mecca.

And if I were a Christian in Egypt I would not be real comfortable.

Yes it was TIC. But at least Egypt allows Christians to live and worship there. Even Iran is more tolerant than the Sandusky Saudis.

I’d say it is a little premature to declare Egypt to be Iran 2.0 just yet.

The new President will have exactly as much power as the military allows him to have.

aaah, the pains of democracy. Lets not forget that we kept slave for our first 100 years. I would have rather seen the secular guy win, but it aint my country. The military will run Egypt for the next 10 to 20 years anyway.
