Yes, someone has finally written it. And we just KNEW this day would come…didn’t we?
A columnist is opening wishing for another 911 to unite Americans (what about the innocent lives that would cost). The link is HERE.
And yes, yours truly agrees with the column writer that it is indeed a “sick” sentiment — no matter what the intellectual (or non-intellectual) rationalization.
What more can you say that the column itself says? (We won’t quote it; it doesn’t belong on TMV).
This can be said with certainty:
Even if there was another 911 attack, President George Bush would never enjoy the same kind of unity and trust he enjoyed on September 11th and Sept. 12th. The gift of unity was willfully sacrificed at the alter of political polarization and gamesmanship. And his administration is enmeshed in a credibility gap so any new measures he’d suggest or implement would be viewed with skepticism by some Americans.
But wishing for another 911?
Save that sentiment — and then repeat it to the families of those who’ll be murdered, if another attack takes place….

Terrorism, Part II
By Steven D. Levitt
On the very first day that our blog was hosted by the New York Times, I wrote a post that generated the most hate mail I’ve gotten since the abortio…
“And yes, yours truly agrees with the column writer that it is indeed a “sick†sentiment”
YES, Joe. This is sick, sick, sick indeed.
Seems to be another example of a frantical column writer leaning too far out of the window in a desperate call for attention. He may soon recognize that this resulted in a deep fall and a heavy impact.
Now, this column makes a few good points, too. But he could have easily discussed the same topic, the division shhowing in the US today, by using a different entry. For instance, he could have written he would like to have a timemachine to bring us back into 2002, when the nation was still united in the war against terror. He could have used so many different ways to start his story, but he choses to call for another 911. This is beyond cynical, and imho it shows that this guy has totally lost his sense of ethical limits. Let’s hope the readership will make it crystal clear that they don’t want ‘their’ newspaper to support such nutcases.
Philly Columnist Wishes For The Murder of 3000+ Americans…
Stu Bykofsky, columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News, has openly called for a second 9/11. His rational? Political unity. That’s right, he wants us to return to the “good old days” when the nation banded together behind a resol…
I personally have got no qualms calling for this guy to be sacked tomorrow. There are limits, and this Bykofsky has clearly crossed a major one.
I don’t know about the rest of you readers, but I plan on calling Bykofsky and his editor first thing in the morning.
Apropos nutcase: Did you read the Krauthammer column in WaPo today, Joe? He left me totally flabbergasted. Never would have thought that I would ever agree with this loony on any topic.
I even support his view that ‘the left’ thinks that the war “caused not only the sorrow and destruction that we read about every day. It has, most perniciously, caused invisible damage”. Sure. However, I don’t see how this is unrealistic, as Krauthammer seems to imply. Just ask some real veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq if they disagree with this view. However, even though many liberals believe that war leaves scars on the soldiers’ and victims’ souls, still only very few fell for Beauchamp and his tales.
OK, all in all, a good column. Except, of course, he cavalierly ignores the right wing motivation to fight Beauchamp: Like with their hypes of the past (Rather and that CNN guy whose name I forgot), by hitting the wannabe author they try to bring down TNR, a magazine they see as yet another example of ‘liberal’ media. And maybe they wonder about the lack of enthusiasm on the left side to come to the rescue of this publication. Seems to be a secret to them that lefties don’t like that increasingly irrelevant mouthpiece of NeoDems, Warmongerers, and Lieberman supporterz.
He!
Here’s the link to Krauthammer’s column:

Even if this were to occur it would not unite the country behind Bush. There’s no doubt in my mind that if there were another 9/11, it would serve as the impetus for countless partisan attacks by both sides. The right would blame the left for enabling the enemy by calling for us to withdraw from Iraq, the left would crow about the invalidity of the claim that the Bush administration has kept us safe, and call for more investigations.
Even worse, the antipathy towards Muslims and illegal immigrants would grow by leaps and bounds, until xenophobia ruled the day.
The administration might use the attack to increase its own power and even try to stay in power longer—like Rudy Giuliani did in NYC after the first 9/11. It would not be our finest hour.
Speaking of nutcases:
“Sheehan announces independent run against Pelosi”

(of course, the nutcase is Sheehan, not, Pelosi, no misunderstanding!)
This woman is working real hard to become the next Ward Churchill. Another sad example of a person who once went public with a courageous and righteous protest and then steadily lost all appearance of a sane person under the influence of spotlight-addiction, ending up as a stark raving loonatic.
Pitiful.
Look for him to get fired from the News … and re-hired as Giuliani’s campaign manager.
Like many conservatives (not all!) his anger/regret is misplaced – he doesn’t want another 9/11 he really just wishes we had had a real presidential administration in place six years ago instead of the tragic jokes we were dealt. (Or should that read “instead of the tragic jokes we voted for”?)
The loss of our national (and international) goodwill and unity following 9/11 is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) measures of the ineptitude of the Bush administration.
He isn’t the only one. Just the most explicit one. Jon Swift satirized the whole emerging meme a few weeks ago here.
Mr. Bykofsky is a vile slug.
