Feinstein Flips, and Southwick Advances

After California Senator Dianne Feinstein crossed the aisle, 5th Circuit Nominee Leslie Southwick progressed from the Judiciary Committee to the full Senate by a 10-9 vote. Southwick is a far-right radical who has written some absolutely appalling decisions, and is far from deserving a life-time appointment to an appellate bench. His nomination should never have been bottled up. It should have been given a full vote in committee, and he should have been unanimously rejected there. Now that he’s on the Senate floor, they too should vote to reject his nomination. If the Senate will confirm a guy like this, is there anybody they won’t let through?

    While I don;t necessarily think a couple bad decisions make for a bad judge, I have to wonder why Feinstein let it go through. I wonder what we’re missing.

  2. So, he’ll be rejected by the full Senate. I suspect Sen. Feinstein was urged to let the the full Senate vote on Southwick.

    Does she think it will make a point, if he’s rejected by the senate, or is it more of a “hope for a media circus”, and embarrass the administration thing? (impossible, of course, as politicians lack shame…)

    That is really unlike Feinstein. I’m not sure why she’s giving in, since the administration has held a hard line on nominations and every other issue before Congress, expecting the Democrats to do all of the compromising. I feel that they should hold a hard line as well, and deprive Chimpy of his legacy.

    There have been several californians over there at the A-Blog declaring that actually they voted for Feinstein for Senate just to get rid of her as mayor of SF. Now this ill-advised wimpy work-around has come back to bite them in the a**…

    {ironic}But certainly, Holly! Yeah, when I close my eyes, I can almost see Joe Lieberman making a courageous stand for liberal principles by calling all Senators to reject this far right wing extremist…{ironic}
