Romney Wins Two US Territories, Kansas Still Up For Grabs Taken By Santorum In A Landslide

Mitt Romney has won Guam and the Northern Marianis (in case you didn’t know, non-state US territories do usually get to participate in primaries), which gives him a few more delegates.

He’s going to want to play that up, because Santorum has strong hopes for a win in Kansas today. Santorum is pretty obviously trying to get Newt Gingrich to quit so he can make it a two-man race between himself and Romney. In speaking to the fringe-right Newsmax.com, Santorum recently made a thinly-veiled offer to Gingrich, although in speaking to Fox News an increasingly desultory Gingrich is pledging to stay in the race. Mostly I hope he does stay in as I view a social conservative like Santorum as very dangerous and Gingrich staying in is going to hurt Santorum far more than Romney.

Although he’s probably leary of the idea, Romney would do well to seriously consider making such an offer to Gingrich himself. Although Gingrich’s presence could prove a distraction, historically it’s not a bad strategy to have a running-mate who acts as an attack dog for a campaign while the front runner strikes a more high-minded pose; Gingrich could also help Romney in southern states come November leaving Romney theoretically try to work harder in other states Republicans normally have trouble in.

*Update*: Santorum has won a smashing victory in Kansas. We can fully expect this to help him in the upcoming fights in Alabama and Mississippi.

Maybe Mitt promised Guam and the Marianas the next winter Olympics.

Looks like Kansas gave most of it’s love to Santorum. Excellent!!! (..it’s all going according to plan)

Zephyr: So say Santorum supporters, and those who believe Santorum can’t possibly beat Obama.

Those of us who believe that Obama is vulnerable and that anyone who wins the Republican nomination is potentially the next President of the United States, and who are frightened of Social Conservatives of Santorum’s stripe, are not going to sleep well tonight. I suppose the hope of the Obama backers is that this will drive people to the polls just to oppose Santorum, but that’s a mighty big risk. Even if Santorum does have a lower chance of winning than Romney, he’s been going up fairly steadily in head-to-head matchups with Obama in various nonpartisan polls. If odds of an Obama win go up somewhat with a Santorum candidacy, what’s at stake if Obama loses also goes up considerably. I think lefties rubbing their hands with glee at this may wind up crying into their beers in November. :-(

And, poor Mitt doesn’t even have a beer to cry in.

    Dduck: LOL!

This pretty much sums up how I feel about the entire Presidential campaign at the moment. And I mean across the board, not just on the Republican side:

And to be clear, I feel like Ren.

Thanks for the cartoon! It has made my day.

I believe that Rick Santorum would be a bad president. I am not willing, however, to believe that congress will grant him the power to destroy the country. Thus, I will hope that Obama becomes president, but I will not run into the forest screaming until Santorum actually accomplishes his agenda.

Meanwhile, I’m allergic to beer. [sniffle, sniffle]

Not too big of a surprise for the state that mandated banning evolution in classrooms. That state is nuts.
