First it was neocon darling and war drum beater William Kristol, who in a WaPo op-ed argued that the Bush presidency “will probably will be a successful one†because there hasn’t been a terror attack on U.S. soil since 9/11, the economy is going great guns and that war thingie is going to turn out okey-dokey.
Now comes president press secretary Tony Snow, who in a USA Today op-ed opines that “Politics sometimes manages to muddle the obvious†and goes on to muddle the truth by stating that the Bushies have taken out two-thirds of the Al Qaeda leadership and isn’t responsible for the ascendancy of all those naughty terrorists in Iraq.
Well, the ’26%’ers’ represent double the number of Americans who support Congress!
Should I start referring to you and those who support Congress as President as 13%’ers?
The problem with this coming election is that Ron Paul just might become the Next President.
The antiwar does not realize one thing. When push comes to shove they are really only about 26 percent of the country. Just like Bush’s cronies are only about 26 percent of the country.
The other 48 percent will be the ones that determine what, when, why, where and how the USA moves forward in 2008.
Am I supposed to take you seriously when you use the words/phrases: “thingie”, “okey-dokey”, “Bushies” and “naughty terrorists”?
Come on, use some sophisticated diction if you want to write something worth the rest of us reading.
Somebody – Ron Paul is part of the paleocon/libertarian anti-war Right. The Left and independents also have an anti-war component. Please show a poll or statistic that says these groups are only 26%. Are you part of the Kristol Kool Aid gang…
AustinRoth:
Heaven forbid that I should be accused of supporting Congress, as big a bunch of do-nothing nitwits as I ever have encountered.
LarLar:
And you expect me to take seriously a request to clean up my dikshun from someone with a name like LarLar? HarHar!
Congress’ poll numbers are low because they haven’t been able to stop Bush. The 70% that opposes the war can’t understand how someone who only has a 26% approval rating can be running our foreign policy into the ground and refusing to deal with a realistic appraisal of his war effort.
In reference to Kristol’s assessment:
It’s interesting that the same metrics somehow never apply to the Clinton administration.
After the WTC attack in ’93 there were no further attacks on US soil (until the Bush administration) and Clinton caught and locked up the actual perpetrators in his time.
The economy was really going great guns and only sacked out under Bush.
And that war-thingy in the Balkans was a successful example of US leadership and military planning which only lacked support from the Republicans in Congress who demanded timelines and strict accountability throughout the campaign.
But you know – black is white, up is down, Clinton was a horrible president, Bush is the Greatest President Ever! and we’ve turned yet another corner to win The War on Terror ™.
Shaun – wow, yet another point we can agree upon. Soon we will be soul mates!
I am a huge H. L. Mencken fan, and I bet you are too. These two quotes seems to sum up your philosophy, as I have seen on this board anyway:
Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.
Giving every man a vote has no more made men wise and free than Christianity has made them good.
What does “Support Congress” even mean? Its 535 people, some of which I like some of which I don’t. I guess if you mean do I think congress is a bunch of corrupt shills that do the bidding of the highest bidder I might be able to have an opinion.
But that being said Tony Snow is a paid liar, and he earns every penny he makes.
Yeah, sounds like another “Snow” job to me!8)
Well Snow’s editorial along with Kristol’s editorial, the Patraeus/Crocker videoconference with Congress and Bush’s meetings with right wing pundits are all part of a game plan to push back against the momentum that will sweep us out of Iraq quicker than the administration would like.
For some insight into Bush’s scary viewpoint here is a link to David Brooks commentary (normally behind NYT firewall).
David Brooks
So those who said Bush has a messianic complex are correct- he believes he is carrying out the will of the Lord. That is exactly what makes him so dangerous.
jdledell- I agree that Snow, Kristol and other administration allies (a much smaller group now) are using the media to try to spin the Bush presidency into a great success- much as they sold the country on the necessity of invading Iraq in ’03. But I don’t think anyone’s really buying it beyond the 26%.
jdledell-
The Brooks piece was scary, scary, scary!!
Bush is till doing God’s work!
