Some Lessons For Internet Journalism

stone, i.f._1.jpg

Given the shaky state of the mainstream media, it is easy for oldsters to get all weak in the knees when we think back to the era of I.F. Stone.

So who the hay is I.F. Stone?

If you don’t know and value incisive reporting and commentary, it’s time that you got to know this chap, whom the WaPo’s Dan Froomkin calls the world’s first blogger.

My introduction to Mr. Stone was through reading “The Trial of Socrates” which was not only beautifully written and well-argued but mind-blowing/eye-opening as well. I highly recommend it to anyone regardless of your interest (writing/journalism/history/law/classics, etc.).

  2. Rudi says:

For all the talk about “liberal media” and other nonsense, I. F. Stone was very progressive and bordered on radical. Please name one reporter today who compares to Stone. I don’t see members of “The Progressive” appearing on pundit or cable shows. There was a Far Left back in the “Stoneage”, not today.

By today’s constipated standards, I.F. Stone would be a member of the lunatic fringe.

  4. This is the first paragraph of the section titled “Debate over relationship with Soviet Union” in wikipedia’s article on IF Stone:

Several historians and researchers — including Herbert Romerstein, John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr — as well as retired KGB officials have published claims and evidence that Stone was one of a number of persons inside the U.S. journalism community who were used by Soviet intelligence agencies as agents of influence. The available evidence shows clearly that Stone was approached by the KGB during the Second World War, when the U.S. and Soviet Union were allied, but debate exists as to his relationship with Soviet intelligence agencies after this initial meeting.

It’s worth reading the rest of the wikipedia article.

  5. Science fiction fandom had its fanzines and APAs decades ago and in a way you could think of them as the snail-mail precursors to blogs.
