The Republicans: Right Where Barack Obama Wants Them (Der Tagesspiegel, Germany)

How bad is the damage Republicans are doing to one another in the Republican primaries? This editorial from Germany’s Der Tagesspiegel outlines why, at least from outside the United States, it looks like reelecting Obama may turn out to be a cake walk.

The Der Tagesspiegel editorial starts out this way:

Mitt Romney, the favorite, is tottering. But who can replace him as President Obama’s opponent? Newt Gingrich’s sensational victory in the South Carolina primary only reflects what an unusual election year 2012 is turning out to be – and the weakness of the Republican field. The base is insecure and still harbors doubts about all the nominees. Now the last four rivals are embroiled in a grueling intra-party battle full of slanderous ad hominem attacks. Obama and his campaign team can sit back in delight as they watch conservatives fight their battles for them. By analyzing the reaction to campaign videos that Romney, Gingrich, Santorum and Paul will use to dishonor one another in the next “battleground” states, Obama will be able to read what citizens see as their greatest weaknesses.

Oh sure, in a sane world that statement would make sense, but remember, this electorate has already helped to elect George Bush not just once, but twice! IOW, don’t assume anything.

I agree with zephyr. Meanwhile, the video on the site is really funny. I recommend it for all readers. Although the language is not English, the video pretty much writes itself.

Oh don’t worry. Sure it looks like a circus now, but once the GOP settles on their nominee it will be back to normal as if this 6 month fiasco never took place. Obama will be the guy who failed to get the economy back up running, couldn’t pass any legislation because he’s too inexperienced, is a secret muslim, and not legally a citizen able to run for president anyways. Also, he punches puppies and kittens.
