The Truthiness Of John Boehner

Sometimes, albeit rarely, politicians speak truths. They don’t mean to do so, but the words come tumbling out. And so it was with House Majority Leader John Boehner, who in his last press conference of the year following the House’s reluctant passage of the extension of pay roll tax deductions and unemployment benefits, spoke the following truth:

“Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing, and sometimes it’s politically difficult to do the right thing.”

Boeher’s statement can be translated as:

“We have been committed foursquare to making sure that the socialist president serves only a single term. We have been committed foursquare to do everything in our political power to further bring down the economy by paving the road to our recapturing the White House on the backs of the middle class, the poor, the elderly, minorities and those who can least afford decent health care. We fought a good fight against doing the right thing. But even some members of my own caucus now believe that while this has been the right thing to do for our party, our country be damned, it has proven to have the opposite effect on many voters. Besides which, I want to keep my job.”
