Mitt Romney will rise significantly in the polls. He’s a great debater – quite possibly the best among Republican contenders.

If by “great debater” you mean saying as little as possible, and taking no tough stances, he’s your guy.

It might also be because the others close to him in the polls stink at debating.

  2. Rudi says:

Mitter is more plastic than Edwards. While a great buissnessman, he isn’t as conservative most of the second tier candidates. Fox attacks Paul and lauds Romney – LOL.

  3. kimrit says:

I gotta agree with Pyst. He wouldn’t have been in my top 3- which were McCain, Paul and Huckabee. Mitt seems like he’s trying to seem the most like Reagan, which is very unattractive and has a phony feel. But I would never hold his religion against him unless he didn’t stand up for the separation of church and state.

  4. C Stanley says:

Did any of you watch the video LOL? It showed actual audience reaction- Romney’s answers were percieved to be more direct than the others’, and his favorability ratings rose among the debate viewers after it was over.

  5. jjc says:

Can’t watch the video, but did watch the last 2/3 of the debate last night. Of the top tier, I thought McCain did best, and the MSNBC analysts (including Pat Buchanan) showed unusual perspicacity by agreeing with me.

But Romney might know something about appealing to the voters in the GOP primary. I’m looking foward to seeing him and Fred Thompson square off in future primaries.

  6. kimrit says:

Maybe GOP primary voters like plastic caricatures of Reagan. I’m not talking about his answer to the question about his religion -which he got from JFK’s 1960 campaign.

He doesn’t seem genuine- he has a huge entourage that make sure he’s always perfect, he’ changed a lot of his views to fit the GOP conservative mold, and he was channelling Reagan during the debate. It makes me wonder who he really is. I can see why people might say the same about Hillary, though.

  7. Pyst says:

Why would I re-watch what I had already seen live?

GOP voters love style over substance C Stan, otherwise how’d we end up with Disaster McBush for the last 2 terms?

These same voters slam anyone that thinks, and utters thoughts too hard for them to understand. So we get underachivers, and obvious plastic fakes when these voters get their way.

Therefore Romney as weakwilled (I hope thats all it is) a thinker he is gets their attention. Remember we are talking about an american public that slavishly watches american idol as if it was the greatest thing ever, and votes in to the tune of 74 million for marginal “talent”.

  8. C Stanley says:

    Pyst,
The point of the post wasn’t an endorsement of Romney’s style, it was a story about an objective measure of how he was recieved by the audience. Get over the phobia of watching a clip from Fox and my comment will make sense.

  9. Pyst says:

And I offered up a slice of truth about the people Romney was selling himself to. You know the objective nature of that audience you were rambling on about?

Not Romney who is bland as can be, a Ken doll appearance more expensive to create than any Edward’s haircut, and void of substance. There you got my opinion of Romney that time, now you’d be right if you said my post was going off about Romney’s style.

And to be honest, who cares if I did the first time? Romney’s fan base here at TMV maybe, comprising you I guess.

I don’t need you to play teacher, I can think for and comprehend as good if not better than you can apparently.

  10. C Stanley says:

Uh, OK, right: you think real “good”, me think bad. Sorry, I guess I forgot my place.

Hint Pyst: Everyone makes grammatical errors but when you make them in the very statement where you are claiming intellectual superiority over another, it weakens your point quite a bit.

  11. Pyst says:

Ok besides being Mrs. Teacher of comprehension you’re going to play English teacher as well.

It’s a simple thing to do, read it again and pay attention to the fact I wasn’t talking about Romney’s style, but the GOP brand of the public’s inability to think critically.

And save the grammatical stuff for the dumpster, it only makes you really petty. You can be error free and still have nothing to say, trust me I’ve read your posts so I wouldn’t act all high and mighty if I were you.
