Secretary Clinton: ‘Free and Equal in Dignity and Rights’

WASHINGTON – What Pres. Obama has done through this directive is historic. Having Secy. Clinton to deliver the message makes it resound.

The United States will begin using American foreign aid to promote gay rights abroad, Obama administration officials said on Tuesday. President Obama issued a memorandum directing American agencies to look for ways to combat efforts by foreign governments to criminalize homosexuality. – U.S. to Use Foreign Aid to Promote Gay Rights Abroad

To use American foreign aid to combat foreign governments from criminalizing homosexuality is something only a president can decide to do and Barack Obama has done a great and controversial thing, given the focus on foreign aid and our economic state, through his decision.

This speech continues what Hillary began in Beijing, China as first lady in 1995, a speech that is foundational to my book, The Hillary Effect, and which is cited in the Introduction. The Hillary Effect itself, along with Secy. Clinton’s advocacy, helped by time, made possible by Pres. Obama’s courageous act, aided by the advocacy of gays and lesbians fighting for equality, which reached critical mass on DADT, manifested a global moment of pride for our country today.

Contrary to the naysayers, I always contended, in fact I knew, that Barack Obama could have no stronger partner than Hillary Clinton in his Administration. Having studied her for two decades, I had never a doubt. Their partnership here sings out.

This speech by Secy. Clinton is a historic moment for her as well and something that resonates even more coming from her.

Of course, in an election season, nothing this grand could go without scurrilous words from the right. It’s fitting that it came from Rick Perry.

“This administration’s war on traditional American values must stop. … Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries is not in America’s interests and not worth a dime of taxpayers’ money. … This is just the most recent example of an administration at war with people of faith in this country. Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many Americas of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong. President Obama has again mistaken America’s tolerance for different lifestyles with an endorsement of those lifestyles. I will not make that mistake.”

Ah yes, human rights as “special rights,” the threats of torture and even death for gays not enough to convince Republicans like Rick Perry that this is a human rights issue.

First Lady Hillary Clinton said “human rights are women’s rights.”

Now she’s spoken for America once again saying, “human rights are gay rights,” with the added punch that comes from putting action behind those words.

Wait till China starts telling the U.S. to stick our ideals where the sun don’t shine. The rest of the world may just be inclined to follow them instead of our meddling Mabel social policies.

I am not a fan of foreign aid, and I really do think we should nearly zero out all our foreign, military, and humanitarian aid. However, if we must continue the stupidity of foreign aid, we should at least condition it on making countries abide by secular democracy, treating all people, including LGBT People, as equals.

“Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries ”

In case you’d forgotten, Perry has garbage for a brain. Keeping other countries from killing or incarcerating people because they are gay is actually not the same thing as giving gay people “special rights”.

Allen — we don’t do business or diplomacy with countries that terrorize their own people. I mean, supposedly. This move is explicitly including “gay people” in the category of “people” — like including “women” in the category of people, or “black people” or “jews”.

Roro is right. In an earlier time (perhaps only a few decades ago) Perry would have extended his thinly disguised hate to people of color – and his disdain to the fairer sex. Just more proof he isn’t even close to having the right stuff.

It’s disappointing to see you on the wrong side of this Allen; there is nothing morally nor politically complicated about understanding the importance of basic human rights.

Agree with you Taylor, the partnership of Obama and Hillary is a good one. I hope there will be much more to come from this alliance.

Roro is right – seconded. This is a simple question of human rights. Promoting human rights is a noble goal of diplomacy.

Would Rick Perry rather have us promote the oppression of gays? Go back to arresting and jailing them? He has been very clear that he wants to go back to only letting gays serve in the military if they lie.

Unfortunately the rumors are that Hillary Clinton will resign even if Obama wins a second term.

Well, Iran won’t have to worry. Ahmadinejad has assured us there are no homosexuals there – and I believe him.

Perry has just released a new political ad that he calls “Obama’s War on Religion.”
In it, he makes specific reference to the gay and lesbian issue.

It would be an interesting thing to hear a religious person’s take on that message.

    Ohioan-

Shall we go to war with Iran in order to free the oppressed gays that are not there?

I say no, what say you?

I was against our actions in Libya, but Clinton was masterful in getting Arab countries & leaders to support NATO.

One thing that’s also manifested is Secy. Clinton getting other nations to join the U.S. & Israel on stopping the Palestinians from declaring a state unilaterally, through abstentions.

Whether you agree with what the Administration and Clinton did is another thing entirely. But State’s had a powerful role in this matter.

It’s why Gingrich suggesting John Bolton for State is so harrowing to consider.

I say no, also, but we’re talking foreign aid – not war. Though we could also use foreign aid to free the 50% of the population that is very definitely oppressed – and if there are any gays, they could be freed of noxious laws at the same time – since foreign aid is less than 1% of our total budget it wouldn’t be very much – but it might help.

Of course we should probably give more aid to the 50% of our own population that are still being raped and murdered in much too large numbers (for a “Christian” society) in the meantime.
