There have been reports that it looked that way — but apparently not.
Or IS that the whole story? A reader sends us the link to the Michigan Republican Party blog which shows two posts mentioning they were trying to block Paul from the debates. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE and see a mention in the first post and an actual story with a link afterwards — a mainstream media story that the Michigan GOP was including on its own blog (and not refuted or denied but put out there).
OUR VIEW: It sounds as if the faced a firestorm of protest and pulled back. All of this, of course, will make Paul a kind of folk-hero to many in the debates. He’ll never get the nomination but the media and those who don’t like the direction of the GOP under the all-for-the-party-and-The-Leader present leadership will watch him with interest. Also, even though other candidates denounced him, it can’t be lost on them there there is a very strong anti-establishment sentiment out there — against the establishment that has taken over the GOP and run it in a way that has started to turn off “classic” conservatives.
UPDATE II:
Real Clear Politics: Remove Ron Paul From Debates?
Petition To Ban Ron Paul Removed?
Thank for link Jon, But I think the G.O.P. here in Michigan has a problem, His right hand, doesn’t know what his left is doing. He’s saying one thing on his blog, and his staff is telling people something else.
And they want my vote? No!
And besides, The G.O.P in Michigan, is in the 517 area code, all them people over there, are first class wierdo’s. We 313 people are much more sane…

What seems really stupid about this idea is that Ron Paul has won the online poll for both the MSNBC and Fox debates- Rudy came in third in the Fox debate. So, it seems like quite a few folks out there might want to hear some diversity of opinion on the GWOT and the Iraq War. What’s more, it sounds like a lot of them agree with him, and are tired of the GOP’s lockstep position on both issues.
seems like our resident “pots” are avoiding their own previous “kettles”……
and the organizers of a CNN debate, who’d previously said Gravel wasn’t invited, changed their minds, Jacobson said.

casual- this seems different to me- Gravel wasn’t invited to the CNN debate because nobody knew who the hell he was, not because there was a campaign to keep him out of the debate. After there was proven interest in his candidacy that made the difference. I don’t think it was an attempt to stifle dissent, but if you have proof, let us know.
I hope Ron Paul continues to be part of the debate. He represents the important libertarian point of view, which has many supporters for all or part of its mission.
Fair enough point, k.
However, I guess everyone knows who Gravel is now! LOL!
If you would like to see Ron Paul succeed with his points more, you should encourage him to lose the “finger-pointing” portion of his rhetoric. He could very well make the same points of substance without alienating as he makes them.
After all, those debates he’s appearing in are not sponsored by the DNC.
The GOP had best leave Ron Paul alone or face the peril of running off the paleo-conservatives in droves. The “Reagan” democrats of old are the ones liking what they hear from Paul, and without him they are going to walk either to the otherside, or away from the polling places come ’08.
Ron Paul has a huge following who like him just the way he is- finger-pointing and all. After the debate he reported a sharp rise in fundraising and interest at his website.
Not all of the GOP is made of macho warmongerers- many like Paul and Pat Buchanan still think the US should pursue an isolationist agenda. I’m not ready to abandon the Democrats, but at least Paul stands out as a representative of the liberatarians. The other candidates seem destined to follow the Bush policy in Iraq, but I think that will be the road to ruin in ’08, with 70% disapproving of the war.
Paul’s ideas deserve to be heard – he’s got far more to offer America than the other candidates. The most important thing? A different way of thinking about the purpose of a country and its government.
Rock on, Ron Paul!

He’s more appealing to us and other (real) Americans [tm] than others. The problem is that he is nearly unknown to the general public (no better known than the Democratic politician that has the Dems upset) and has no chance to win the nomination, and would be savaged by the media if he were. Then there are all those people in this country who are happy with big government and with entitlements in the electorate.

RP is a 2%, as in at beast he will get 2% of a vote and that’s reaching. The reason most people don’t want to bother with him in the debates, those that care at all, is because he is not a real candidate. Look if he gets enough support people may shift some of their stances to something closer to what he espouses. The chance that he will even be in the running at any point 0%. Right now we have so many people in these debates that you can’t really get much out of them. Both sides need to get rid of some of these guys.
Good to know that someone in the GOP has a sense of righteousness and orderly thinking!
“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”
How can the other “religious” candidates dare disagree and attempt to ridicule Mr. Paul.
Go Ron!
Bones- why not dump Gilmore and Tommy Thompson? They have less chance of winning the nomination than Paul, with no visible support. And Paul DID win the online polls after BOTH GOP debates, which means that many people are agreeing with him. Its better to have a slate of candidates with some diversity of opinion, than 10 Stepford guys who kowtow to the Republican Religious Right.
