We Have Not Yet Arrived At Obama’s Post-Racial Moment. Not By A Long Shot. »
As Herman Cain continues to do whatever he is doing, Rick Perry continues to self destruct, Mitt Romney continues to keep the wind at his back for the simple reason that he’s not like most of the other candidates, which is to say a slave to the Tea Party, Newt Gingrich is undergoing a back-from-the-dead metamorphosis.
In other years, this would be unlikely. After all, Gingrich’s entire staff bailed on him earlier this year because he was more interested in jet setting with his third wife, Callista, than going out on the stump in Iowa, and then his fund raising dried up in the wake of the revelation that wifie had a $500,000 line of credit at Tiffany’s.
But the former House speaker is back with a vengeance and a new CBS News poll has him running near the front of the pack, more or less neck-and-neck with Romney and not far behind Cain. The latest PPP poll has him in the lead.
Props to Gingrich for positioning himself as the lesser of other evils — yes, it’s been that kind of year as the Republican field is slowly winnowed down — and he may yet be the go-to guy if the nominating convention deadlocks between, say, Cain and Romney.
I suspect that this would be fine for the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue because when all is said and done, Gingrich is a resume without a man.
Among the accomplishment on the resume of the man who led the impeachment charge against Bill Clinton are serial infidelities, beaucoup nutty ideas, a sucky relationship with the news media, and a legendarily short fuse. Gingrich, meanwhile, has been one of the major players in injecting a mean spiritedness into modern American political discourse, and at times he can be downright nasty. Oh, and an ego as big as some of Callista’s diamonds.
None of that should necessarily be a disqualifier, but when Gingrich talks about bringing change to Washington a mere four years after Barack Obama gave that a try, it’s time to take cover, because his weapon of choice is dynamite.
When I listen to N. Gingrich, I am reminded of a suggestion from Ayn Rand. If you see a contradiction in life, reevaluate your premises, you find that one of them is wrong. Gingrich has a Ph.D. in Economics. His economic plans would likely throw the country (and possible the planet) into a depression–possibly one we could never claw our way out of. He will spout some really good knowledge and then spout something that seems totally insane.
I find that he is not insane; therefore there must be some other reason for his support of economic policies that would damage the country.
Newt’s ego is fooling him into thinking all his crappy baggage won’t sabotage his chances. Even most republicans know better than that.
Newt doesn’t seem to be in it to win, which is why his campaign staff rebelled against him early on.
If he retires to pursue the presidency, that would be a sign that he’s serious. Until then, I think he’s in it for the attention.
He is a very smart, posturing, prickly pain in the ass, in other words, PPP.
Newt was buddies with that racist remarker Trent Lott. Amazing pair of fools in my book.
Why do people always have to put good decent God loving people down. We are one day going to be judged by every word that goes forth from our mouth.Newt has asked God to forgive him for his sins and has tried to do the best he can from that point on and here we are judging him on sin that has been washed away by the very blood of Jesus. Give him a chance people he is trying to put this country back on track from a disaster. Please people give the man a chance before you crucify him for no reason. Let he without sin cast the first stone.
Dawn:
Gingrich would have converted to Paganism if Callista was into it.
To riff off of an old Vietnam War refrain, Gingrich would destroy America in order to save it.
Because Dawn….
We must judge to choose and we must choose to vote and we must vote to prevent Newt’s party from getting into power and expanding on the same disaster they started under Bush.
When Jesus returns we’ll have a monarchy, until then its fist-a-cuffs. So come over here and let me sock yer fergive’n mug right in the chops!
Unless….well pizza sounds good. Which reminds me of hats and women and HERMAN CAIN!
Give pizza a chance.

Confucius say: Man who chase tail, bite own ass.
I feel so sad for you. Hearts mede of stone only the love of Jesus can soften. Really my heart breaks for the lack of love and caring for people in this country. It all started when people started loving their selves more than God and their neighbor. Search your heart people I mean really search your heart and see if there is any light there or has darkness taken its place.
Jesus loves you but He doesn’t love hate.
Dawn, as a Rep, I can tell you that not liking Newt, or not wanting him to be anywhere near the Presidency, has nothing to do with religion, faith, God or Jesus.
I wanna know why regular people are paying 18-30% interest on their credit cards and Newt had an interest-free revolving account at Tiffany’s. That he ran up to the tune of $500,000 (wtf?).
Dawn, Newt’s big mouth, bigger ego and itchy zipper make him unelectable. Jesus has absolutely nothing to do with it. BTW, did you just characterize Newt as “a decent, God loving person?”. Sweetie, the abiding love of Newt’s life is hearing himself pontificate. Everything else is secondary.
MY heart breaks that we have people such as yourself constantly injecting their religious beliefs onto the secular world of politics.
Man I love how someone from the far left pretends to give a fair opinion on a republican. Personally I don’t think Newt would be the best choice for a presidential candidate but the man is incredibly smart and knows the ins and outs of the fed govt as well or better than any. I also must say the list of his achievements is intellectually dishonest. He lead the charge in 94 with the contract for America, which he authored, leading to the Republicans ending 40 years of a Democrat majority in the House. You don’t have like the man to see the clear historical significance of that event. He was a clear advocate for a balanced budget and the House with him as leader made possible Clinton to submit a balanced budget in 1999. If anyone believes that would of happened with a Dem majority in the house they are kidding themselves. Newt made a big push on putting Congressional info on line with the library of congress and is the reason you can now look up the text of bills, how people voted, and other info. Sure eventually someone would of done it but the fact is Newt did do it. He is a policy expert on health care, national security, foreign policy. He is a historical scholar and a teacher.
I also think some of the personal attacks need to be placed in perspective. The serial adultery was with two different women who both became his wife. His first wife he married when he was 19, she was 26 and his former high school teacher. While he does have baggage it’s intellectually dishonest to pretend that he is some empty suit without achievement.
EEllis: Find me someone who knows Newt or has worked with him, who has anything positive to say about him. He is NOTORIOUSLY fickle, undisciplined and nasty.
It wasn’t Democrats that ran Newt out of Congress, if you’ll remember.
Ellis, I think your Newt adulation would benefit from a good reading of allen’s recent poem.
“Really my heart breaks for the lack of love and caring for people in this country.” – Dawn
As does mine Dawn, but I think this has less to do with any particular religion than it does a national failure to embrace basic moral priorities – beginning with honesty and compassion.
LOL-
What kind is going on here? I mean have you ever read any comment as naive as Duck’s?
Everybody knows Herman Cain is the chosen one.
Give pizza a chance.
Being naive is better than being unintelligent.
Plus, you should learn how to read.
Well duck if God isn’t for Newt, he must be for Herman Cain, because Romney will never be president.
Lol have GOP voters lost their minds? You all are still talking about Gingrich like he has a chance. Short term memory loss must be a side effect of double digit debates. Newt Gingrich was already down this road. He didn’t make it then, he won’t make it now. The GOP is so unbelievably desparate not to have Romney in, that they are now going to retread Newt and act like he wasn’t already found out to be an unpleasant unelectable figure. Good lord.
Spencer and Vera, The man may be a slug, though that is not my opinion, but my response had nothing to do with that. Basically not liking someone does not suddenly rob them of all accomplishments and achievements. What the heck is wrong with people? It’s like everyone wants to act like they are five. Screw honesty it’s all about your emotions.
I agree with you EE. Some people love to attack the other side as in a game of dodge ball. Their own side, not so much.
Newt is very smart with historical facts, he however would probably be a cantankerous autocratic president.
Coming from a poor and abusive home Newt seems to like the high life a bit more than I’m comfortable with also. I think he is overly partisan tho I must say he may be less partisan than most of his detractors on here.
I think he’s a smart man who could be very valuable in the govt but I’m not for him as president. I think he’s a good policy guy and he might make a good sec of state.
I think he’s a good policy guy and he might make a good sec of state.”
Maybe a lower level. IMHO, His hubris and pontificating would drive co-workers to distraction.
