Fred Thompson Is Capturing Conservatives’ Imaginations

Various press reports say potential conservative Republican primary voters just WISH they had another choice. And there is someone not in the race who seems to be increasingly appealing to them — former Senator and TV actor Fred Thompson. Here he is in action talking to GOPers in Orange County, CA (watch it and leave your opinion):

  1. Somebody says:

He will declare in a month or two.

    He will win the nomination.

He will return to the Reaganesque speeches of “Aint America grand” while the liberal democrats bemoan how awful our country is and how awful the world is and how only the democrats drug of choice “Government handouts” will solve the countries ailments.

Americans will wise up once again and realize that the Democrats are offering NOTHING NEW. Same old stuff, just rewrapped a bit differently.

Americans will realize that Fred is offering nothing new but a bit different then what Bush has offered. That is HOPE.

Democrats offer no hope, just more handouts and more programs to keep the down………..down………..the poor………poor……….the unions…………unionized………….the druggies……….drugged

All with one thing in mind. Feed them the drug of choice…………Democrats version of government handouts.

We need safety nets. But more then safety nets we need programs to get those who need safety nets back to work and back on their feet with dignity and pride in self accomplishment.

This is and always has been the message of the Conservatives. Help em to succeed. Not help them to fail so they will always vote for Democrats.

Therein lies the distinction between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats are good people. They just dont seem to have a lot of faith in about 50 percent of this country (Their constituents.) and dont trust the other 50 percent.

    How sad for them.

  2. I don’t know if I agree with you about him just sailing to victory. But he really can COMMUNICATE which is vital in the 21st century. Also, he is not tied to the national campaigns of the past. I think a lot of Republicans want a totally new face. His is hardly new…but it is a fresh face for political campaigns. I also don’t think in this day and age it’s going to be easy for ANY candidate to just come in there and win everyone’s hearts. Look at polls and you don’t see overwhelming feelings that the Democrats don’t stand for a single thing and you don’t whopping approval of their performance in Congress so far. So I agree partly with you that it’s unlikely he can be dismissed and the other candidates may split each others’ votes enough so he can get some of theirs and the votes from people who want someone different. But his nomination automatically meaning he can start getting ready for a move to the White House? He hasn’t fully be vetted or tested by the national news media yet — a process the Democratic nominee will face. And each stumble is picked up by conservative or progressive talk, bloggers, the mainstream media. NOT a cakewalk for anyone… (I”m traveling today so I may be unable to comment or post much)

  3. Chris says:

    Somebody,
There are problems with our country, and if you don’t see that, then you’re a fool.

  4. Somebody says:

I never said he would win the white house. I said he would win the nomination.

Yes Chris their are lots of problems with this country and the Democrats want to legislate the hell out of everything to solve the problems by just throwing money at it.

Throw money. Throw money. When in doubt…like Obama said………his foreign policy consists of doubling foreign aid.

Democrats dont know how to do anything else.

It’s interesting that “Somebody” thinks of the Republican message as the only one that offers hope for a bright future, even if it also has the same tired old ideas behind it.

Obama’s campaign message is essentially one of hope. That’s what he’s campaining on, leaving the details often as fuzzy as possible. The first Clinton’s little slogan from the 1996 convention was that he was the man from Hope. I remember playing some of Obama’s 2004 DNC speech in a class once (doing analysis of political speech), and it brought tears in the eyes to a professor who finds his vision for America supremely inspiring and hopeful.

Visions and hope are not owned by one party. However, listeners often doesn’t find the vision with which they disagree all that hopeful.

  6. pacatrue says:

If there had been a way (and I’m not sure there is since there’s no real government to give it to) to get 300 billion dollars worth of schools, jobs, and hospitals in Palestine, instead of $300 billion dollars into a war in Iraq, the goals of American foreign policy would be 10 times further along than they are today.

But of course, war costs nothing – neither financial nor human. So when the only foreign policy idea a neo-conservative has is using the military to advance U.S. goals, they aren’t just throwing more money at something, unlike those irresponsible money throwing liberals.

  7. pacatrue says:

sorry, “listeners often don’t”. I edited to change my noun on that comment and forgot to go change the verb to match.

  8. Somebody says:

    What does Obama offer?

No one knows. Not even him.

2004 DNC speech in a class once (doing analysis of political speech), and it brought tears in the eyes to a professor who finds his vision for America supremely inspiring and hopeful.

Lord help us. Who says the Colleges arent full of Left wing radicals professors with agendas a mile wide?

    Crying over a political speech?

    Jeeze.

  9. pacatrue says:

The point, somebody, is that many people do in fact Obama inspiring and hopeful. There’s a reason that his book was a major bestseller across the nation. I understand that you do not agree with Obama, but the fact that you do not believe his hopeful statements does not mean he isn’t offering his vision of hope. Yes, of course, liberal people find liberal visions more inspiring. You, however, said that Democrats never offer vision and hope. What you apparently really mean is that you yourself do not find Democratic visions inspiring. I understand that, but they are two completely different claims.

  10. pacatrue says:

By the way, the part of the speech that was so inspiring to a professor was Obama talking about how there is not a white American and a black America, etc., with us divided, arguing over who gets to be in control. Instead there is a United America in which we are all together fighting for a way forward. Also, Obama talks about hope that there is a place for all of us in the U.S. going forward, no matter our backgrounds. If we work hard and do right, we can succeed. He repeats the word Hope over and over as the refrain to the speech. This is the vision that you so easily label as a “left wing radical with agendas a mile wide.” No evidence was presented in my comment about the professor arguing for this radical agenda of working together in the class. The professor did not choose the material or even appoint the topic. You didn’t bother to find out what was inspiring to someone. Instead, you just declared that because someone finds a political speech that you disagree with moving that they are the personification of some boogieman indoctrinating the youth with their radical ways.

    OH SNAP!

  12. Somebody says:

    HOPE over and over.

    Yes he offers hope.
    Promises wonderful things.
    Gives flowery speeches.
    Says all the right things.

He reminds me exactly of Jimmy Carter.
    Smile and all.
No experience and a message of hope and peace and prosperity.

What he gave us was a nation on the verge of Hopelessness and frustration.

I’ve seen one Jimmy Carter in my life. Perhaps if you had lived thru a Carter presidency you would know what I am talking about.

Anyone can give messages of hope and peace and prosperity over and over again. Very few if any have ever

    EVER

    Delivered.

  13. Sam says:

And somebody, seriously you call Obama vague? We have had a president thats started a war on vague ideas. Bush doesn’t have any idea why we went there, how we are going to make his new goal of a democratic iraq work, or any idea how long its going to take. He’s pissed away about 15 years worth of foreign aid on this war and whereas foreign aid buys us influence and likely does some good in the world, this war has done the exact opposite. Oh yea, and there are LOTS of dead people as a result of these vague notions of Dubya’s.

Obama has been pretty on point both before and after the call to invade Iraq was made. The guy responds vaguely because like all politicians he is asked pretty complicated questions and expected to squeeze an answer into a 15 second sound bite. Guys that can see the forest for the trees are getting pretty rare in this political climate. At least Obama has a brain and knows how to use it.

  14. Somebody says:

    Why is Obama about Bush?

But lets address your points Sam. You are the typical far left Liberal that has no clue how foreign policy works……Just like your Man Obammmm.

Pissed away 15 years worth of foreign aid? Only the far left believes this.

Have you noticed how the last 3 elections of National leaders………Canada, Germany and France have gone….

    Are you ready?

Have elected leaders who campaigned on closer ties with the United States and not as you guys like to say……….Distanced themselves from anything American. Now whats even more significant in this is that these people advocated stronger and closer ties with the USA and the PEOPLE VOTED THEM IN OFFICE.

All of Europe has bought into the war on terror. Reluctanly, cautiously, but they have bought into it. Every nation in Europe is starting to take a hard look at Immigration and multiculturalism.

Eastern Europe is chomping at the bit for closer ties with the USA. China is working hard to curtail the war mongering of the North Koreans. India signed a pact with the USA and is looking for closer ties with the USA.

Pakistan their arch rival is a staunch ally with America. Afghanistan is free. Iraq is free. Hamas is wandering in the wilderness wondering who is going to send them money so they can keep blowing up Israelis.

The world has bought into the war on terror and you guys are the ones that want to quit. Yes its tough in Iraq. But Bush clearly laid out the plan, said it would be long and hard and at the first sign of trouble you far lefties with OBAMA at the HEAD of the pact have thrown up your hands and surrendered.

Coming home when the rest of the nations in this world have bought into fighting the war and then the leader wants to come home.

I’m sorry but Harry Reid put it best

If we are elected the “WAR IS LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’

  15. Notice that “Somebody” has bought into the Iraq = “War on Terror” meme. The hilarious part is that he thinks that Europe has bought into it as well. Well, they haven’t.

As for the rest of his posts slamming the idea of having legislation and spending money to address problems, I assume his answer is to do nothing and hope that Santa and the Tooth Fairy between them can take care of everything.

  16. Somebody says:

    Smooth Reply Jim Satterfield.

A valued contribution to the discussion. I feel as if Obama gave you those words because those sound exactly like his words.

This is precisely what Obama is doing. Saying nothing, offering nothing and vaguely slamming the right with nothingness.

I certainly can see how that appeals to those of you who scream Nazi, Fascist, Heir, Oberfuhrer, Mein Kampf, Neocon, Religious Whackos ten thousand times a day.

Someone who stands for nothing would indeed be your type of candidate.

  17. I pointed out the fact that those European governments that do believe in fighting terrorists don’t buy into the Republican meme that Iraq is the same thing. This is what you were claiming, Somebody. Don’t like it? I can only say that the truth must hurt terribly because it is accurate.

  18. DLS says:

“The point, somebody, is that many people do in fact Obama inspiring and hopeful.”

Yes, and I’ve already seen Obama bumper stickers, of all things. How far have we descended? Obama is nothing but a happy face, a cheerier version of Lamar Alexander and his “new ideas.” WHAT new ideas? He’s a typical Democratic Party legionnaire.

And there’s no way y’all can blame the descent on Bush, so don’t bother wasting time trying.

    > Santa and the Tooth Fairy

… fairy godmother, magic genie, and most of all surrogate parent: That is how so many people view government, have been exploited as such by the Democratic Party, and shows how far we have descended.
