I would feel better about the slow canning of Imus by his show’s sponsors if they treated this as the beginning of a long-term project to clean up the entertainment they sponsor. But, by acting only when there is an outcry, their actions seem shallow, driven by the moment and by money, not by principle – despite their claims to the contrary:
“We have to think first about our consumers, said Jeannie Tharrington, a P&G spokeswoman, “so anyplace where our advertising appears that is offensive to our consumers is not acceptable to us.
So Imus was acceptable to P&G last week, before the public controversy? Doesn’t she really mean: “… that is offensive to our consumers and makes headlines…” ?
Too bad, but I don’t believe that P&G or any of the advertisers jumping on the dump Imus bandwagon are doing so driven by the question, “How shall we live with one another with best grace and most hope?” [Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes] I wish our leaders and our bloggers and our radio talk-show hosts and the enablers of mean-spirited “entertainment” programs would get around to discussing that question.
One of the things that people are forgetting is that Imus is more like a small corporation and since he is not working, they are not working.
The I-man has a new job. In ministry! Read the latest on my blog – “Necessary Therapy”.
