It seems the good old honey may be going out of our lives!!!
I got a shock when I travelled from Hamburg to Husum, a small lovely town on North Sea, and discovered that honey bees have almost disappeared.
It now seems to be a worldwide phenomenon. “US beekeepers have been stung in recent months by the mysterious disappearance of millions of bees threatening honey supplies as well as crops which depend on the insects for pollination,” reports Jean-Louis Santini of AFP.
“Bee numbers on parts of the east coast and in Texas have fallen by more than 70 percent, while California has seen colonies drop by 30 to 60 percent.
“According to estimates from the US Department of Agriculture, bees are vanishing across a total of 22 states, and for the time being no one really knows why…
“Domestic bees are essential for pollinating some 90 varieties of vegetables and fruits, such as apples, avocados, and blueberries and cherries.
” ‘The pollination work of honey bees increases the yield and quality of United States crops by approximately 15 billion dollars annually including six billion in California.’ ”
If you go away like this honey, there will be nothing else but more bitterness in this world!!!
I had heard about this happening the United States but I had no idea that it was happening world wide.
For some reason I was reminded of a certain idiot Senator’s Golden Fleece Awards when I heard this. He made fun of fundamental scientific research projects such as researching the “sex lives” of insects. Apparently he and his fans never considered the possibility that the more we understand the basic fundamentals of every aspect of every creature on this planet the more information we might possess about useful creatures like honeybees. If we’re lucky maybe we’ll find an answer quickly. If not…maybe some biologist’s cut budget decades ago would have laid a groundwork for it.
Ah yes. I have some “Tupelo Honey”, just like the Van Morrison song, in my cupboard, and some nice multi-grain artisan bread.
Perhaps I had better enjoy it now while I still can.
And yet, I still have tons of those pesky wasps trying to get through my screen doors.
Cruel.
