Remembering Elvis

Thirty four years ago today my parents took my sister and I on our first trip to Disneyland.

When we arrived at the hotel there were the banner headlines.. Elvis Dead.

At the time, I didn’t really realize what it meant, but my Mom sure did.

If anything demonstrates the tragedy of drug addiction, this was it. A once in a generation talent lost in his 40′s.

Here is a little of his magic

I liked (and like) Elvis, but not to extent of keeping track of the date of his death—or his birthday.

Apparently Michele Bachmann does, she wished him Happy Birthday today.

  2. Allen says:

Not an Elvis fan. Never was. Don’t know why anyone would waste there time remembering Elvis Presly.

    (sigh)

  3. PATRICK EDABURN, Assistant Editor says:

I probably wouldn’t remember the date either if it were not for the fact that I have a memory attached and they talked about it on the radio.

I’m sure there are people who are and are not fans, though I wonder why one who is not a fan would was their time commenting on the topic.

Many people here now were born after Presley’s death and don’t understand it. To many for a moment it was a big deal, to most in the long run really was no big deal, as those living through and long beyond it know (it’s put into proper perspective, in particular after witnessing other deaths of various kinds), as with the killing of Bobby Kennedy (or John F. Kennedy).

That’s true as well for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack, too, for example.

Life goes on, and some things are more important (to most) than others.

Elvis brought to the “WHITE” audience a sanitized version of R&B and delta blues. Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones paid a greater homage to the blues. Better yet, just listen to the originals, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf or Buddy Guy.

R&B and blues cover songs dominated the Rolling Stones’ early material, but their repertoire has always included rock and roll. Critic and musicologist Robert Palmer credits the Rolling Stones’ endurance and relevance to having been “rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music”, while “more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone”.[1] The Rolling Stones have been credited for the higher international regard for the primitive blues typified by Chess Records’ artists such as Muddy Waters, who wrote the song “Rollin’ Stone” after which the band is named.[2]

  6. Allen says:

Now I know why we should remember that Elvis Died today, Because Michelle Bachman publicly announced, “Happy Birthday Elvis” to crowd of her lemmings.

Truly Repubs, you can’t be serious. This is your front runner?

    His Birthday was January, dummies.

    LOL

  7. StockBoyLA says:

“Truly Repubs, you can’t be serious. This is your front runner?”

    LOL! Surprised? They’re ALL fact-challenged.

  8. PATRICK EDABURN, Assistant Editor says:

Now come on guys… Obama was given a pass (correctly) over 57 states.

Not that I’m denying Bachmann is an idiot, but let’s get real here.

Besides, we should just enjoy some good music in this thread, we got plenty to argue in :)

Now come on guys… Obama was given a pass (correctly) over 57 states.

That’s cause we could use 7 more States:

    State of San Diego.
    State of Los Angeles.
    State of San Fransisco
    State of Alta California
    State of Dallas
    State of Houston
    State of West Texas
    State of West NY
    State of Puerto Rico
