This news surprised me: Mitt Romney raised almost as much as Hillary Clinton did in the first quarter of this year. Where Hillary raised $26 million (and thereby breaking the old Democratic record), Romney raised $23 million (which is a party record as well). Not bad for someone who stands at 3% in the polls.
Giuliani raised $15 million, McCain… well, McCain has “not publicly disclosed his total” yet. Of course, McCain already tried his best to lower expectations: he “admitted that he didn’t particularly like to raise money. He told reporters in New Hampshire that he got off to a late start for this campaign and was “going to pay a price for it’.”
Romney is the number one fundraiser for the GOP right now. It will be interesting to watch whether he’ll be able to keep it up and whether it’ll impact the polls (I hope for him that it does… and fast). I cannot quite imagine that people will keep on giving if he doesn’t attract more support from the Republican voters.
We still have to wait for Obama’s exact numbers, but reports indicate that he’ll announce to have raised approximately $21 or $22 million. If those reports are accurate, it’s huge. Obama, the outsider, the man no one knew raises $22 million in the first quarter of the pre-election year. One thing that will worry him and his campaign is, of course, whether they will be able to keep it up: he cannot afford to shine too early.

“He told reporters in New Hampshire that he got off to a late start for this campaign and was “going to pay a price for it’.â€?
Oh come on…how could McCain get a late start? He’s been running for years.
Has his campaign actually imploded?
I noticed the Guiliani’s wife kills puppies piece making the rounds as well.
Yet somehow Obama’s Teflon remains intact…largely the result of a media decision, I suspect, to boost his candidacy against Hillary’s.
With the advanced pile-ups of primaries this will be a bizarre election season for sure.
Lets await his numbers first. If he tops Giuliani…
Does any one know how much of Hillary’s $26 million is to be locked up in a general election fund? If a candidate doesn’t win the party’s nomination, those who donate to the candidate’s general election fund get their money back, making contributions to a general election fund less risky than contributions to a primary election fund. Thus, those who contribute to a candidate’s primary election fund must have more conviction since they’re taking on more risk (they don’t get their money back if their candidate doesn’t get nominated). All of Romney’s first-quarter fundraising was for the primary election. Hillary’s camp isn’t disclosing how much of her $26 million was raised for the general election, raising suspicion that a good part of the money was raised for the general election. Thus, at least some of the donations to Hillary’s campaign should probably be excluded when comparing her 1Q fundraising tally to those of the other candidates. The Hillary camp probably hopes the mainstream media will gloss over this important detail. Although the breakdown in her 1Q fundraising will ultimately have to be disclosed on April 15, the media attention will have faded by then.
Thus, the true winner of the so-called ‘invisible primary’ (at least among those who have already announced their 1Q results) is Mitt Romney.
Agreed I would almost say but then… what about Obama? I’d say we have two winners then.
It was said:

Or at the very least, to keep the dreamy naive people and other lefties interested in voting, believing that there still is a real contest. Also, as a minority it is a sin for anything bad to be said about Obama by the liberal media.
> Hillary’s camp isn’t disclosing how much of her

Most realists consider the real contest to be between her and the GOP candidate, i.e., that she has the nomination won already.
Clinton, McCain, Giuliani, Obama and even Edwards seem capable of inspiring some passion, whether for or against. But I don’t know anybody who cares about Romney.
Still, 23 million bucks say otherwise.
It looks like the rumors that the Bush clan is sending donors to Romney is true. Not sure why though. Anyone have any ideas?
To all of the non believers and not sure whys. Time to recognize the best man is rising to the top. 3% is what the polls have indicated but now we see he clearly has more support. Do not be surprised, I’m not.
A couple of things… First, Democrats are leapfrogging Republicans in presidential campaign fundraising? How crazy is that? When was the last time it happened? I certainly can’t remember.
Also, Romney’s numbers are remarkable, given his standing in poll after poll. But I wonder where that money’s coming from? It’ll be very interesting to see a breakdown by… region. I’m thinking a certain western state might be a veritable font of funds for him. In any case, I’ve always felt he wasn’t getting the attention he deserved from the Right’s base, as well as the press.
It’s probably worth noting that $2.35m of Romney’s total is actually a loan from his personal wealth. But topping $20m is still impressive/scary.
I can’t but get the sense that we are preparing for the mother of all sales at Wal-Mart.
The presidency is for sale, I guess, and I seem to be the only person in the nation repulsed by watching the money counters.
As long as all you care about is cold hard cash.
Romney is most impressive politician I’ve ever seen, and I think the Republican party desperately needs someone impressive.
It was wondered:

It means that many sources of big money, not only Hollyweird but all kinds of sources of big money,
a) believe Hillary is likely to win;
b) believe the Republicans are going to lose;
c) believe the 2008 results will be like 2006 or even more heavily Democratic.
They’re putting their money where they believe the winners are, so the winners will remember that later.
What would be interesting is not if just Hollyweird were contributing extra heavily, or labor unions, or the trial lawyers, or “public interest” [sic; liberal] groups, or other liberal special interests were contributing to Democratic candidates. What would be interesting is how many business interests, for example, also are heavy contributors. Some businesses such as Archer-Daniels-Midland may contribute to both parties to hedge their bets (so either side is favorable to ethanol subsidies and other goodies for ADM), for example. But this may also be betting heavily by businesses on a large Democratic victory in 2008.
Wait and see what other 2008 campaigns also get higher contributions for Democrats than for the GOP.
Considering the fact that Romney’s funds are mostly from many supporters compared to Hillary’s Hollywood elites, Romney’s numbers are extra impressive. One might wonder if the polls are really accurate too. If the media will allow Romney to talk to the people of America, it will be all over for Hillary. Romney is what this nation needs. If Romney is allowed to debate Hillary, she is toast.
Mitt is the Man! All you have to do is listen to him once and he will inspire you. This guy is the most charismatic person I have ever seen. The American people will fall in love with Mitt. Just wait and see and I know I won’t be surprised, but many people will when he becomes president.
I wish the drive-by-media the best of luck in trying to find something new to talk about rather than Mitt being a mormon. Seriously, I think everyone has had enough of the same old thing they talk about all of the time.
America has a chance here to elect a very smart man in Mitt
Romney. He will bring class and respect to the office of president. A man of his qualifications does not come by that often so lets take advantage of this opportunity. This country sorely needs such a man in the Whitehouse.
