Conservative Still The Leading U.S. Political Ideology
Americans’ political ideology at the midyear point of 2011 looks similar to 2009 and 2010, with 41% self-identifying as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 21% as liberal.
I’ll make you a bet: Political identification will swing in this country between 2015 and 2020 at about the same rate as we’ve seen the swing on same-sex marriage.
I’ve got no data to back that opinion up. I just believe it takes a while to let go of long-held labels.

Why would you question that, Joe? That’s what has been so for a long time. That is with the also long-time dysfunctionality and lack of purposefulness of conservatism, not to mention the Republican Party.
Remember, also, Joe, because of liberalism’s failures before (such as we saw in the 1970s and which continue), “liberal” has a stigma in our society, and many avoid it by saying they are “moderate” or “centrist” instead, even though they are liberal. (They misuse those two terms, “moderate” and “centrist” not only to avoid using the word “liberal” about themselves, but to try to mischaracterize conservatives, including making them appear more extreme than they are.)
I think you’re right Joe, but I think phenomenon like the TP could make it happen sooner than you think.
Lets see, how does the Tea Party stand on Social Reforms? Since they have demonstrated their ability to control ALL of government while only holding a fraction of it, I see an about-face right away.
Personally, while the elderly are being cast into the street unopposed by Social Liberals. I just don’t the value in fighting to protect or extend any liberal social reform issue. none.
“Conservative” and “liberal” mean different things to different people. The meaning changes with time, area of the world, and subject.
If you’re correct, what you’re saying is you’ll tell the pollster you support same sex marriage, just don’t call me a ” liberal”……..pretty funny actually
