Cautionary Note: Debt Ceiling Limit Deal is NOT Definite Yet

Several commentators and journalists including Time’s Mark Halperin are cautioning speculation on any debt ceiling limit deal. The reason: there is still a good chance GOPers could reject any deal Republican leaders and Barack Obama produce. Remember that some Republicans a)don’t want even a shred of compromise b)don’t think it’d be a big deal if there is a default.

It ain’t over till it’s over..

And it ain’t over.

I hope someone forces a blink. Irrationality should not be rewarded, and republicans are in the minority for a reason. If they can threaten the US population with a horrible recession to get what they want, why even have elections?

  2. DLS says:

Well, the House GOP is stupid to reject the deal if it means default.

As to irrationality and worse, the public repudiated it by the Dems in 2010, Allen. That’s despite the anti-reality claims by some that the Dems lost because they didn’t go (too) far left enough(!).

They could still write their own bill late on August 2, to just raise the debt limit enough to carry things through for six to nine months or so; then they could reject the budget legislation or just not vote on it.

I hope everyone realizes that Monday is the day BEFORE the deadline. If you know anything about a good drama, you’re supposed to push the limit.

It’s too bad that congress doesn’t have an orchestra pit.

  4. AARON ASTOR says:

DLS, I think this is one of those “buyer’s remorse” moments when those who voted Obama in 2008 and Republican in 2010, start to drift back away from the Republican Party. The House GOP is controlled by lunatics. They are a breed apart from the typical ideologue who comes to his senses when the chips come down.

  5. PJBFan says:

@ Aaron Astor: I voted for McCain in 2008, and for the GOP in 2010, and even I have some buyer’s remorse. Granted, my Congresscritter is of the moderate/centrist stripe, but I live in NY.
