I have to agree with you, David- the Bushies tout the virtues of democracy abroad , but apply secretive methods designed to subvert it at home. The administration’s obdurate flouting of the Geneva Conventions, signing statements and openly hostile attitude towards the Constitutionally mandated role of Congress stem from their belief in the Unitary Executive branch. Their tendencies towards systemic abuse of power puts them closer to the realm of King George the III than George Washington. They have used a real threat- terrorism – to expand the authority of the executive.
You can’t rest and think you’ll maintain the freedoms you have today. There are always going to be people trying to subvert and control, and we have to fight them.
