Having an English wife who often tells me “I hear what you say,” I can attest to most of these.
As to “You must come for dinner,” we—Americans—have a similar one: “Come and see me/us,” said 95 percent of the time almost automatically without rally meaning or reflecting on it.

lol, thanks Dorian: I think maybe a good answer to all those is something like, “aww, I can tell you really dont like what I just said/did.” That would seem to cover most. I wonder what the response would be then. My sense with my British publishers who are truly amazing people, is that underneath the ‘reserve’ there is often this quixotic, highly “Puck”-like interior person who has wonderful humor. The “understated rejection or obfuscation” is actually nothing, as you know, compared to what we have gotten for decades from that other org that needs decoders constantly…the vatican. lol
Hi Dr E.
Its so nice to hear from you again! I wish I had my printer working because some of your posts were of excellent quality, especially the ones where you lending your analysis on a person,s personality such as the one on Bin Laden or the one where you said if you have trouble falling right to sleep to breath deeply and hold a count to three seconds and say a prayer in regards to a loved one, I do that now on occassions and it works:-) I have a British friend who signs off with Cheers, even when the subject is kinda complicated..what does it mean? I take it to mean keep a chin up..things will get better anyhow glad to see you write something even tho I know you mentioned that you work night shifts.
