Clinton: Vast Right Wing Conspiracy is Back

Devlin Barrett reports for the AP that Hillary Clinton is talking about the “vast right-wing conspiracy” again. She started using that phrase (publicly) during the time of the Lewinsky scandal.

As Barrett points out Clinton was ridiculed for referring to a ‘conservative conspiracy’ once “evidence of the affair eventually came to light”, but “many Democrats have since insisted that Clinton was correct, pointing to the well-documented efforts by conservative financier Richard Mellon Scaife to fund a network of anti-Clinton investigations.”

New Hampshire Democratic Party chairwoman Kathy Sullivan said she absolutely agreed with the senator’s description of the case.

“People think we’re paranoid when we talk about the vast right-wing conspiracy, but there is a real connection of these groups — the same names keep popping up,” said Sullivan. “They are the most disgusting group of political thugs that I have ever seen.”

Conservatives will, undoubtedly, continue to ridicule Clinton for mentioning this ‘right-wing conspiracy’ for the rest of her career, but I have to admit that – although there is certainly a lot of truth to what Ed Morrissey argues: that both sides have individuals who are willing to break the law for political purposes (but that there’s no such thing as a ‘conspiracy’) – I do understand her.

Hot Air’s allahpundit has a good point (especially when referring to Obama):

Only the Glacier could think dusting off this dilapidated meme is a good idea. It wins her no points with the left, who hate her for Iraq; it portends a return to Clinton-era rancor, which would be distasteful even if it didn’t follow eight years of Bush-era rancor; and it sharpens the contrast with Obama’s image as a fresh face who’s above the fray of partisan politics. He’s talking about a new day in Washington and she’s working off a script that’s literally ten years old.

Oh my god, not that old chestnut! The gop can barely get themselves together, find a decent candidate or pull their splitting apart party into a semblence of their old self to even think of conspiracy.
Oh Hillary is so desparate. That ain’t no Vast rightwing conspiracy chomping at your behind. It’s Barack Obama on the verge of overtaking your lead and your air of inevitiability. Unless, of course, you’ve decided Barack is the vast rightwing conspiracy in the guise of a freshman Democratic Illinois Senator.

    Good for Hillary!!!

She is the ONLY Democratic candidate with the courage to bash the rightwing and she’s been doing it for a very long time. Now she is
increasing the volume. She is sending a message, not to Obama, but to Rudy, McCain, Rove and the rest of them, that she will not be taking anymore of their crap.

    Go Hillary.

She has my vote, that’s for sure.

    Hillary for President!

Hillary is right. She would also be right if she said there were vast compiracies of every stripe. There are individuals out to get the dirt on politicians they want to destroy. When they band together and rent an office, they are called political strategists.
Conspiring is what they do for a living,

  4. Ya sure says:

“that she will not be taking anymore of their crap.”

    LMAO!

Yeah, good for Hillary ’cause we all know that what American politics needs most right now is more bashing!

Does anyone really doubt that Hillary can give as good as she gets, and thus her complaints about being ‘attacked’ are rather like the kid in school who baits his/her classmates but then tattles to the teacher when one of them lashes out at him/her?

Reading about all the conspirational activities in the WH, like those exposed by the Libby trial and the current Gonzales flap, I fail to see what is so ridiculous about referring to conspiracies.

This presidency has been as much, if not more, about expanding the power of conservatism and the Republican Party than about leading the entire nation for the greater good of all.
Yeah, the nation includes those pesky Democrats and Progressives and Independents.

I never listened much to Hillary before, but she is beginning to make a lot of sense.

CStanley, Hillary is the one being bashed, and she isn’t baiting anyone.

“and it sharpens the contrast with Obama’s image as a fresh face who’s above the fray of partisan politics”

Oh please, I don’t need to read another fawning account of obama’s supposed virtues. What makes allahpundit believe obama is above the fray? He’s like any other politician, but he has people hoodwinked into believing he’s different somehow.

  8. DLS says:

“Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” = the American people.

That was true then and it is true now. We aren’t going away.

    Laura,
I think your argument is with Amanda Barnes, not with me. She is the one who was praising Hillary for having the courage to bash the right wingers. I simply responded to her sentiment (though yes, I do happen to think that Hillary engages in below the belt attacks, but she’s good at doing it through intermediaries).
