Now that the political air has been purified by Anthony Weiner’s departure, Washington can concentrate on its other endless fount of hypocrisy–money.
Many Tea Party purists, who came to Congress to force government to live within its means, we learn, have not been doing well on that score personally. Among 87 new GOP members, the Washington Post reports, at least 30 had liabilities totaling $50,000 or more in 2010–credit card debt, unpaid student loans, mortgages on investment properties.
The zealots who campaigned on the simplistic premise that the country should emulate families have not been doing well in setting an example.
“Like the rest of America,” one Texas Congressman had proclaimed, “the government needs to tighten its belt and work within its means” as his disclosure forms now show credit card debt of $45,000 to $150,000.
“If they’re responsible for their own personal finances, then they may have a mind-set to be frugal with the federal Treasury,” says a spokesman for Taxpayers for Common Sense. “But…”
MORE.
Another stupid reach by the far left to point fingers at the right while in the middle of their own scandal.
I understand wondering about their credit card debt, but…
“unpaid student loans, mortgages on investment properties”
There is nothing wrong with these types of debt. These are normally very good long term investments.
It goes along with the falsity of their statements regarding the U.S. debt. They proclaim that cutting spending will reduce the debt. Any debt counselor will tell you that yes, cutting spending and living within a sound budget is the first step to fiscal solvency. BUT you must ALSO actually take cash out of your pocket and pay down your debt!
The T.P.’s staunch refusal to discuss the tax side of the equation means they are only solving half the problem which, any mathematician will tell you, isn’t solving anything.
Yes, they should emulate Pelosi, Murtha, et al, and feed their personal wealth via corruption and stealing from the American public like a good Democrat does, huh?
Next thing you know we’ll be having a Secretary of the Treasury that can’t figure out his taxes. I agree that ideally we should vote for people that can manage their personal finances well, but tying this to the Tea Party and not politicians in general is just more partisan BS. All politicians preach fiscal responsibility, many don’t practice it.
And Shannon is right, there is nothing wrong with personal debt on student loans or investment mortgages as long as it can be managed responsibly.
Not to mention these are all new legislators which means they have had to set up new second residences in DC with many new expenses. Some of these will be reimbursed and some won’t that they carry a fair amount of CC debt is hardly surprising unless they were independently wealthy before being elected. Sounds like a bash for being less than rich to me.
Dino Pete! Are you still upset about Weiner’s self-destruction and wanting to “blame” others and redirect attention out of resentment?
Shame, shame. Tsk, tsk.
Meanwhile, bashing GOP freshmen is equally ridiculous. It’s not as if they’re grossly overspending our tax money and overreaching to the point where they were thrown out of office the way Democrats did and were in 2009-2010, for example, or are playing at “government” the way the Obama administration often has been.
As for the Tea Party, I get tired of the stupid attacks on them, who are typical US center-right folks and populists of that ideological placement, who correctly resent along with the rest of us the gross excesses and wrongdoings by Washington.
(Also stupid but not attacked are those who insist there’s nothing wrong with federal entitlements, that they shouldn’t be touched, and who are mindlessly upset at and attack any hint of entitlement reform. After entitlements, they’d also defend the rest of excess in Washington.)
Dude, maybe the stupid attacks on the tea party will stop when the tea party stops being stupid. Besides, since when do you care about attacks on “disaffected democrats”?
As for the hypocrisy quotient? Don’cha know iokiyar?
I agree with Shannon, Inde, DLS and DG on this, it is just an off base bash,
I’d also like to note that I despise the current version of the TP like a lot of folks, but this attack is silly.
