For those who don’t know: Egyptian blogger Abdel Kareem Nabil was quite critical of Egypt’s president Mubarak, the university he attended (they “threw him out”) and (radical) Islam. As a result, the Egyptian government prosecuted him for insulting Islam and Mubarak, and… today was the day of the verdict: guilty, 4 years in prison.
Please read more at my own blog.
Color me surprised. I hope the guy makes it through his time in one piece.
That is truly awful.
MvdG: what ever happened to your former co-blogger who was seeking asylum in Canada?
C.S.: he has been admitted!
Ah, great news on that front then. Thanks for the update.
Yet another reminder how few the number of countries that have anything resembling free speech are.
Of all of the freedoms guaranteed in our Bill of Rights- isn’t freedom of speech absolutely priceless? We bloggers talk so casually about authoritarian tendencies of our own system, and criticize our own leaders so carelessly, its unimaginable that we might be expressing our opinions in a society that really is authoritarian, and where you can lose everything by pushing for democratic reform. This is someone with true political courage.
