Chris Matthews Calls Palin “Profoundly Stupid”

I’m not sure which is worse, the fact that his statement was somewhat unprofessional or the fact that the statement is about as profound as saying the sky is blue.

His sin is using the wrong word. She is not “profoundly stupid.” She has used her profound ignorance into a multimillion dollar a year deal. She is not stupid but she is incredibly ignorant and she sees that as a feature not a bug.

  2. JSpencer says:

I think the word, “stupid” might apply more to her fans than it does to her. In any case, I think the comment demeans Matthews more than it does Palin.

  3. PATRICK EDABURN says:

I do think it was unprofessional of Matthews as well as unnecessary, after all everyone knows she’s stupid and those who think otherwise won’t be persuaded by Matthews.

  4. It’s another sign of how our commentary and analysis have deteriorated. Blogs can have a snarky style. Matthews was an excellent newspaper analyst before he went on MSNBC and also wrote the superb political book Hardball. The descent into sheer name calling continues in America (and if you argue with that you’re a pooh-pooh head:). There are a zillion other ways he could have said it. That aside, I have to admit: Matthews is one of my favorites (am biased in his favor because I loved his book Hardball and I was a PoliSci major). I think the bar has been set so low now with the popularity of the style of talk radio that it drags other parts of our infouniverse down with it. I agree with Pat: VERY unprofessional. (He could have said “59 watts short of a 60 watt bulb” for instance:)

Another one of those… take a look in the mirror … moments. I doubt CM would like what he sees.

  6. DLS says:

Matthews continues to be noxious. He’s on MSNBC — befitting.

  7. roro80 says:

The word “stupid” doesn’t really bother me, and it seems fitting for Palin, I suppose. But someone like CM, who has a pretty long and well-documented history of being a sexist blow-hard, should probably at least take a bit of care in realizing how well this fits in with his own reputation. The man is a quite decent pundit — verging on a good newsperson — as long as there are no women either in the story nor in the immediate vicinity. Which, given that women are half the population and all, means that he pretty much sucks.

I watch Matthews almost every Sunday morning, mainly because his guests are pretty good and actual discussion sometimes occurs. Matthews himself threw in the objectivity towel a long time ago, although I used to like him quite a bit and he was much more balanced when Hardball first started.

Palin isn’t stupid and definitely not “profoundly stupid”. She probably has average or slightly above-average intelligence, but seems to lack judgment and intellectual inquisitiveness. At least that’s the way she comes across to me.

  9. DORIAN DE WIND says:

I like Chris Matthews, but he shouldn’t have called Palin profoundly stupid. He made a mistake.

Now here is the bottom line: After Chris admits his mistake tonight, anyone who quotes what Matthews said last night is lying. :)

I make it a habit not to castigate someone when they speak the truth. Profoundly stupid is accurate and not even that unprofessional. Dumb bitch, that would have been unworthy of public broadcast, but profoundly stupid? Not so much. He can say it about democrats, that would also be accurate. Try it out.

“Harry Reid, in fact all the democrats in Congress, are profoundly stupid for not having the balls to raise taxes last year when they should have.”

See, accurate and moderate in tone considering how much more accurate stronger language would be.

  11. DaGoat says:

Sorry Slamfu, Harry Reid and all the Democrats in congress are not profoundly stupid either. I prefer to think of them as misguided.

  12. slamfu says:

The majority of Democrats are spineless panderers only marginally less on the take than their GOP counterparts. They get in power only when the GOP policies have been put into place, proven disastrous for the nation, and the country decides to let the B team play a few innings.

  13. DORIAN DE WIND says:

I don’t know if Chris Matthews apologized tonight for calling Sarah Palin “profoundly stupid.”

However,Matthews has received reprieve from an unlikely source.

None other than the profoundly wise Sarah Palin said on You Report, We Decide Fox, referring to Newt’s backtracking and apologizing::

I don’t know why politicians feel that they have to apologize for something that they said just because they’ve gone through a 24-hour cycle of the lamestream media giving them a hard time…If Newt Gingrich believes that it’s right-wing social engineering to undo Obamacare and reform Medicare … then say so. But don’t apologize later just because the media has dinged you on what you said.

  14. DaGoat says:

If Matthews was a politician then that would make sense DDW. He is supposedly a journalist.
