We’ve Apparently Attacked Al-Qaeda in Somalia

CBS News:

(CBS/AP) A U.S. Air Force gunship has conducted a strike against suspected members of al Qaeda in Somalia, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports exclusively.

The targets included the senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa and an al Qaeda operative wanted for his involvement in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa, Martin reports. Those terror attacks killed more than 200 people.

Al Qaida in Somalia? Don’t they know its just an aspirin factory or something?

I’ve got video and analysis for those interested. I’m a progressive, as my friend Joe Gandelman knows, so Captain’s Quarters and HotAir fans will have to hold their breath as they plunge into reality.

Maybe this is the type of thing we should have been doing all along, rather than getting bogged down in Iraq.

  4. Kim Ritter says:

BYG- I agree with you. I do think Bush et al was terrified that the terrorists would get access to WMD’s and take out a major US city. You still hear that argument from the right. That has led us into a paralyzing conflict in Iraq.

i thought we destroyed al quaida and all their leaders

    we are fighting the boogeyman

and this is a first…a wag the dog operation to take everyones mind off another wag the dog operation

or were they just trying to keep the press from going to pa to watch the vp hunt

After 3 plus years of screwing up on all front the government has finally done something I can cheer. BYG I am with you as well.

Taking out known badmashes makes much more sense than a long campaign somewhere. Invading Iraq was a poor choice for many reasons, but I do think the folks pooh-poohing the WMD issue are doing so with perfect 20-20 hindsight. There were enough conflicting reports so that a case could be made that Saddam Hussein was rebuilding or had secreted some WMDs. What we discovered was that he had conned us, like his neighbors, into thinking he was well armed, while he had eliminated his stock of WMD. Find AQ operatives, and demise them. That’s fine with me.

I just hope to God that they get it right. I’m all for bombing terrorists into their much loved paradise, but I’d reaaaally hate for it to turn out to be another wedding party.

  9. Al Maviva says:

Right on, Lynx. Isn’t it amazingly uncanny how with all those precision weapons, practically the only things our servicemembers ever hit are aspirin factories, hospitals, wedding parties, schools, retirement homes, orphanages, and charities that benefit starving crippled children living in severe poverty. You’d think just once in a while, they could hit somebody other than a civilian, but apparently, just about everybody ever attacked by our troops is a poor helpless civilian, just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, according to ‘sources’. Yeah, this one was probably a wedding party. Or maybe an interfaith reconciliation service. Or a yurt-warming. Or a bat mitzvah. Or a. . .
