There He Goes Again

Rep. Virgil Goode is back at it in USA Today.

His staff would do well to advise him to leave well enough alone, recognizing that clarifications rarely mollify; instead, they tend to make matters worse, especially when the words “end diversity” are included in one’s attempt to set the record straight. Ok, I know I’m taking those two words out of context, but honestly, does Rep. Goode really think that if we promote diversity we’ll be overtaken by just the opposite?

That’s precisely where he’s missing his own point, ignoring hundreds of years of American, melting-pot history in the process.

Virgil is a racist pure and simple. Jesus, spending so much time worrying about what book a man swears his oath on is an honorable cause? I think not…..especially for a politican.

  2. Paul Silver says:

I feel that Mr Goode and others are unclear on the Judeo-Christian concepts. We triumph over fear and violence by showing those with an open mind a more satisfying path.
Many pious folk confuse honoring the message with honoring the messenger.

  3. Tully says:

Racist? Not judging from the letters referenced. There is not a single reference to race in either of them.

Anti-Muslim anti-immigrant populist bigot/demagogue? Now, that charge sticks like glue!

  4. Kim Ritter says:

And the sad part is that in Mr. Goode’s district, he received almost total support for his position from his constituents! Fellow Americans- meet your neighbors!

    melting pot is the key

    Ah, those wonderful Judeo-Christian concepts…

A few years ago PBS aired a program titled: “Matters of Race”. In it there was the following quote attributed to a Lakota Shaman:

“Religion is for people who are scared of going to hell. Spirituality is for people who have been there.”

When I hear people like Mr. Goode talking like he has been, followed by his declaration of faith and belief in “Almighty God” this quote always comes to mind.
