Late last night YouTube released an online video editor through TestTube, their ideas incubator:
Without installing any software, it allows you to:
- Combine multiple videos you’ve uploaded to create a new longer video
- Trim the beginning and/or ending of your videos
- Add soundtracks from our AudioSwap library of tens of thousands of songs
- Create new videos without worrying about file formats and publish them to YouTube with one click — no upload necessary
Early word is the process is slow, meaning there is a substantial lag time between keyboards commands and edit tasks. Beet.TV talked with YouTube engineer Rushabh Doshi who says they’re seeing very short lag times today for generating previews “and we hope to continue to iterate on this… ideally there should be no latency.”
Let’s hope. In 2007 YouTube launched a Flash-based editor based on Adobe Premier Express that, Google acknowledges, “despite offering features like transitions, captions, adding images, it was slow and buggy.” And discontinued. This time around speculation is that a more fully featured editor might be integrated into Chrome OS as a purely-web based video solution.
