Washington’s decision to impose sanctions on Venezuela’s state oil company for doing business with Iran have triggered fury in the Latin American Left. Tomas Borge, the last living founder of Nicaragua’s Sandanista National Liberation Front, writes for Aporrea that the sanctions are just an old trick of the ‘Yankee Empire’, and that Venezuela has just as much a right to relations with Iran as the U.S. does to ties with ‘genocidal Israel.’
For Venezuela’s Aporrea, Comandante Tomás Borge writes in part:
The government of the United States – that is to say, the empire, is well known for its brutality and brazenness. It’s also stubborn in its amnesia. Obama shouts himself hoarse, imploring us to forget the past. The past is intervention; the past is arrogance and contempt for the sovereignty of nations; the past is murder; the past is violation without thought or shame in regard to international law. Like clockwork and algebraic precision, the present is the same.
We remind the arrogant Yankee government that our countries – at least most of them – have decided to become sovereign and free as the eagles. Asking for level-headedness, respect, and courtesy from the empire is like begging for objectivity from the right, or ugliness from the full moon – or as they say here, pears from the elm tree. We will be independent, Mr. Yankee, gentlemen of the right, irreversibly doing things for ourselves.
